As of February 2015, North Carolina houses about 38,000 offenders in 56 correctional institutions. CHYDARU
CHYDARU, unabbreviated name Chapel Hill Youth Development and Research Unit, is an experimental youth prison operated by the Institute of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the North Carolina prison system. Built in 1945, it opened as a prison for youth under the age of 18 on May 1, 1964. The project was as an advancement in prison structure. It closed later in 1965 due to budget shortages. Sometime during the 1970s (presumably 1973) it housed the Bureau of School Services, which was operated by UNC. Later in 1975, it was repurposed to store radioactive waste. As of 1996, it became exclusively a radioactive storage-for-decay facility, where short-lived radioactive wastes are stored until they are no longer radioactive, at which point they are removed. North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women (NCCIW) is the primary North Carolina Department of Public Safety prison facility housing female inmates on a campus in Raleigh, North Carolina, and serves as a support facility for the six other women's prisons throughout the state. Neuse Correctional Institution
Neuse Correctional Institution is a minimum and medium security state prison for men in the United States, operated by the State of North Carolina Department of Public Safety in Goldsboro in Wayne County. Housing 816 prisoners, Neuse Correctional Institution received its first inmates on August 27, 1994. Neuse was built to replace Triangle Correctional Center in Raleigh as the eastern North Carolina processing center for adult male misdemeanants. The original 500-bed construction project was authorized in July 1992 with a budget of $10.6 million, and another 100-bed dormitory was added to the construction program in July 1993. Alexander Correctional Institution (AXCI) is a North Carolina Department of Public Safety state prison for men, located in Taylorsville, North Carolina. The facility opened in 2004 as one of three 1000-bed Close Custody prisons built in the state. The institution is a Close Custody prison, used mainly for housing felons. Roanoke River Correctional Institution
The Roanoke River Correctional Institution is a minimum/medium security prison in North Carolina, United States. The oldest state prison in North Carolina, it has operated from 1892 to the present. It is located in Halifax County, on approximately 7,500 acres that was purchased by the state in 1899. It was previously named the Caledonia State Prison Farm and the Caledonia Correctional Institution. The prison is mostly for men serving a life sentence. Halifax Community College works with the prison to provide vocational classes like cook school, block masonry, plumbing. Inmates may participate in classes for adult education and preparation for the GED tests.
