List Of North African Airfields During World War II
This is a partial list of British Landing Grounds (LG) In North Africa, used during World War II. There are over 250 known. Some coordinates may be incorrect. Not all of these were active airfields; some were depots, some were repair stations, and some were decoys. Some are still in use, and some were moved and upgraded by Americans to handle heavy bombers. (It should also be noted that LG-176 through LG-186 were also numbered LG 1 through 10). LGs Misc. North Africa
North Africa, or Northern Africa is a region encompassing the northern portion of the African continent. There is no singularly accepted scope for the region, and it is sometimes defined as stretching from the Atlantic shores of Mauritania in the west, to Egypt's Suez Canal. Varying sources limit it to the countries of Algeria, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia, a region that was known by the French during colonial times as "''Afrique du Nord''" and is known by Arabs as the Maghreb ("West", ''The western part of Arab World''). The United Nations definition includes Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, and the Western Sahara, the territory disputed between Morocco and the Sahrawi Republic. The African Union definition includes the Western Sahara and Mauritania but not Sudan. When used in the term Middle East and North Africa (MENA), it often refers only to the countries of the Maghreb. Aboukir
Abu Qir ( ar, ابو قير, ''Abu Qīr'', or , ), formerly also spelled Abukir or Aboukir, is a town on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, near the ruins of ancient Canopus and northeast of Alexandria by rail. It is located on Abu Qir Peninsula, with Abu Qir Bay to the east. Name The town's present name is Arabic for "Father Cyrus", one of a pair of fourth century Christian martyrs venerated as Saints Cyrus and John by the Coptic Church. History The remains of many ancient buildings from the Egyptian, Greek and Roman periods can be found near the town. About southeast of the town are the ruins of the Ancient Egyptian coastal town of Canopus. A little farther east, the now-dry Canopic branch of the Nile once entered the Mediterranean. The wide Abu Qir Bay (Khalīj Abū Qīr) stretches eastward from the town as far as the Rosetta mouth of the Nile. Amiriya
Al-A'amiriya (Arabic العامرية) is a neighborhood in the Mansour district of western Baghdad, Iraq, on the way to Anbar Province. The name is also written Amariya, Amariyah, Ameria, Ameriya, Amerya, Amiriya and Amiriyah. It used to be an upper-class neighbourhood until sectarian war in 2006. Under ISIS rule, many rurals was displaced from Anbar to Al-A'amiriya, which resulted in even more demographic change. Sidi Abdel Rahman
Sidi Abdel Rahman ( ar, سيدي عبدالرحمن) is a village on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in Egypt. Overview Sidi Abdel Rahman is located in the Egyptian Western Desert on a bay of the Mediterranean Sea, has a beautiful beach, and is a great place to rest. There are a large number of unexploded landmines, dating from World War II in the area that have caused human casualties and hindered development in the area over the years. Sidi Abdel Rahman is not far from the site of the famous 1942 Battle of El Alamein of World War II. Mausoleums and a cemetery for the Allies can be found nearby, with at least ninety-nine soldiers laid to rest there. The unmarked remains of thousands of German soldiers can also befound in the cemetery. On September 30, 1942, ''Luftwaffe'' ace Hans-Joachim Marseille, who claimed an unrivaled total of 158 aircraft destroyed against the Allies, was killed near the settlement. RAF El Daba
El Daba is a village and rail station about 180 km West of Alexandria by road. RAF El Daba (otherwise Desert Landing Ground 105) is a former Royal Air Force military airfield located approximately 4.6 kilometres south-southeast of the village. El Daba was a pre–World War II airfield, one of a number of DLGs created in the Western Desert of Egypt after the Munich Crisis of the late 1930s. During World War II, it was used as a military airfield by the British Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Forces during the North African Campaign against Axis forces, and by the Luftwaffe. Royal Air Force Squadrons which used the airfield between 1939 and 1942 were No's 30, 33, 45, 73, 113, 211.
