Nigerians
Nigerians or the Nigerian people are citizens of Nigeria or people with ancestry from Nigeria. The name Nigeria was taken from the Niger River running through the country. This name was allegedly coined in the late 19th century by British journalist Flora Shaw, who later married Baron Frederick Lugard, a British colonial administrator. ''Nigeria'' is composed of various ethnic groups and cultures and the term Nigerian refers to a citizenship-based civic nationality. Ali Isah Jita (born 15 July 1983), simply known as Ali Jita. He is a Nigerian Hausa musician, singer and song writer. Early life Ali Jita was born into the family of Alhaji Sallau Jibrin Kibiya who is a butcher and his mother Hajiya Ummul-Khairi in Gyadi Gyadi area of Kumbotso local government Kano state, Nigeria. He was raised in the Shagari quarters of Gyadi Gyadi. As a little boy, his father moved his family from Kano to Lagos, then to Abuja due to his business purposes. Education Ali Jita started his nursery/elementary education in Shagari Quarters. He then did his primary and junior secondary education at Bonikam Barracks, Victoria Island, Lagos state. Olubankole Wellington (born 27 March 1981), popularly known by his stage name Banky W and credited in film as Banky Wellington, is a Nigerian singer, rapper, actor, entrepreneur and politician. Early life Olubankole Wellington was born in the United States on 27 March, 1981 to Nigerian parents. His family returned to Nigeria when he was five years old. He began singing at a young age in his church choir. Education Wellington schooled in Lagos for his primary and secondary education and returned to further his tertiary education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York, US on a scholarship. He rose to prominence with the release of the song "Vision 2020", and a follow-up remix which featured Nigeria rapper Olamide. Babatunde Olatunji
Michael Babatunde Olatunji (April 7, 1927 – April 6, 2003) was a Nigerian drummer, educator, social activist, and recording artist. Early life Olatunji was born in the village of Ajido, near Badagry, Lagos State, in southwestern Nigeria. A member of the Ogu people, Olatunji was introduced to traditional African music at an early age. His name, Bàbátúndé, means 'father has returned', because he was born two months after his father, an Ogu (Egun) man, Zannu died, and Olatunji was considered to be a reincarnation. His father was a local fisherman who was about to rise to the rank of chieftain, and his mother was a potter who was a member of the Ogu people. Olatunji grew up speaking the Gun (Ogu/Egun) and Yoruba languages. Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe (born 14 June 2002), known professionally as Ayra Starr, is a Nigerian singer. She was born in Cotonou, Benin. Ayra Starr began a fashion career at the age of 16 with Quove Model Management before deciding to pursue her musical career properly. After covering several songs by popular artists on Instagram, she posted her first original song on her page in December 2019. This brought her to the attention of record executive Don Jazzy, and led to her signing to Mavin Records. Ayinla Omowura
Waidi Ayinla Yusuf Gbogbolowo better known as Ayinla Omowura (1933 – 6 May 1980) was a Nigerian Apala musician born in Itoko, Abeokuta in 1933. Biography Omowura was the son of Yusuff Gbogbolowo, a blacksmith, and Wuramotu Morenike. He did not have formal education and started out working at his father's smithy but left and went on to working several jobs as a driver, butcher, carpenter and bus park boy. He was however discovered by Adewole Alao Oniluola, who later became his lead drummer and started an apprenticeship in Olalomi, an Apala variant. Omowura was known for feuding with other musicians including his superiors such as Haruna Ishola, whom he later acknowledged to be his superior. He also feuded with Ayinde Barrister, Fatai Olowonyo, Yesufu Olatunji and Dauda Epo Akara. These feuds colored his music throughout his discography. Ayinla Kollington
General Ayinla Kollington (born 20 August 1949) is a Nigerian Fuji musician from Ilota, a village on the outskirt of Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. He is also called Baba Alatika, Kebe-n-Kwara, Baba Alagbado. Life Ayinla Kollington ranks alongside his friend and competitor Ayinde Barrister as the two most important artists to dominate Fuji music from its inception in the 1970s through to the 1990s, by which time it had grown to become one of the most popular dance genres in Nigeria. Between the mid-1970s and late '80s, Kollington ranked with Barrister as the leading star of Nigerian fuji music – such as apala and waka, a Muslim-dominated relation of juju, retaining that style's vocal and percussion ingredients but abandoning its use of electric guitars in order to obtain a more traditional, roots-based sound. Ayinde Bakare
Ayinde Bakare (1912 – 1 October 1972) was a pioneering Yoruba jùjú and highlife musician in Nigeria. Early life Saibu Ayinde Bakare Ajikobi was born in 1912 at Okesuna Lafiaji area of Lagos to a soldier father. His father, Pa bakare was from Ajikobi Compound in Ilorin, Kwara State. Education He began his education at St. Mathias Catholic School, Lafiaji. Thereafter, he worked as an apprentice boatbuilder with the old Marine Department in Lagos. Career He began his foray into music after watching a band play at an engagement. He asked the band leader, Tunde King if he could be an apprentice with the band and was allowed by King to be a student. Bakare also played for an early juju exponent, Alabi Labilu.
