Newcastle University
Newcastle University (legally the University of Newcastle upon Tyne) is a UK public university, public research university based in Newcastle upon Tyne, North East England. It has overseas campuses in Singapore and Malaysia. The university is a red brick university and a member of the Russell Group, an association of research-intensive UK universities. The university finds its roots in the School of Medicine and Surgery (later the College of Medicine), established in 1834, and the Edward Fenwick Boyd#College of Physical Science, College of Physical Science (later renamed Armstrong College), founded in 1871. These two colleges came to form the larger division of the federal University of Durham, with the Durham Colleges forming the other. The Newcastle colleges merged to form King's College in 1937. Neil Astley, Hon. FRSL (born 12 May 1953) is an English publisher, editor and writer. He is best known as the founder of the poetry publishing house Bloodaxe Books. Life and work Astley was born in Portchester, Hampshire, and grew up in nearby Fareham. Lighthouse Family
Lighthouse Family were a British musical duo that rose to prominence in the mid-1990s and initially remained active until the early 2000s. Singer Tunde Baiyewu and songwriter Paul Tucker formed the act in 1993 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, after meeting while studying at university and both working at the same bar. Their 1995 debut album '' Ocean Drive'' sold more than 1.8 million copies in the UK alone and established them as a popular easy listening duo throughout Europe. They are best known for their worldwide hit "High", which reached number four on the UK Singles Chart and number one in Australia. Tunde Baiyewu
Tunde Baiyewu (born Emmanuel Babatunde Baiyewu, 25 November 1965) is a British singer and songwriter of Nigerian descent, best known as the vocalist of Lighthouse Family. In 2004, he embarked on a solo career, releasing the album ''Tunde''. In 2013, he published his second album, ''Diamond in a Rock''. Early life and career Tunde Baiyewu was born in London to a middle-class family of Nigerian descent. His father worked as an engineer but died of cancer when Baiyewu was five, after which the boy moved to Nigeria with his mother and younger sister in order for the family to be closer to relatives. Baiyewu learned to speak Yoruba after moving to Nigeria and attended a boarding school near the capital, Lagos. Ten years later, he returned to Britain, attending the University of Northumbria in Newcastle upon Tyne and obtained a degree in accounting. James Baddiley
Sir James Baddiley FRS FRSE (15 May 1918, in Manchester – 17 November 2008, in Cambridge) was a British biochemist. Early life and education Baddiley was born and brought up in Manchester. His father was director of research at the ICI dyestuffs division in Blackley. He attended Manchester Grammar School and Manchester University in 1937 to read chemistry obtaining a BSc and MSc. He was accepted as a PhD student by the Nobel prizewinner Alexander Todd. Career Todd's group did fundamental work on the chemistry of nucleosides, nucleotides and nucleic acids. This formed the base for subsequent work on the role of these compounds in cell biology and heredity. In 1944 he moved with Todd to Cambridge University and was awarded an ICI research fellowship. Kane Avellano
Kane Avellano is a British adventurer and a long distance motorcycle rider. As of August 2017, Avellano holds the Guinness World Record as the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe by motorcycle. Biography Avellano was born in Spain and was brought up in South Shields by his mother, Louise Byers. He went to Harton Technology College and graduated from Newcastle University in 2015 after completing a degree in computer science. Riding Avellano first started riding in the beginning of 2015 and completed his first long distance trip around Europe that year. Without a real plan, he rode for on his Triumph Bonneville through France, Spain, Portugal, Andorra, Italy, Sicily, Switzerland and Belgium.
