List Of National Hockey League Longest Losing Streaks
This is a list of the longest losing streaks in National Hockey League (NHL) history. The list includes streaks that started at the end of one season and carried over into the following season. There are two lists, streaks that consist entirely of regular-season games and streaks made up of playoff games only. The 2003–04 Pittsburgh Penguins and 2020–21 Buffalo Sabres own the record for the longest losing streak in NHL history at 18 games. The 1974–75 Washington Capitals and 1992–93 San Jose Sharks own the NHL record for the longest pointless streak at 17 games; the 2003–04 Penguins' losing streak included one overtime loss, and the 2020–21 Sabres’ losing streak included two overtime and one shootout loss. Since the 1999–2000 season, the NHL awards a team one point for an overtime loss, and since the 2005–06 season, a team also receives one point for a shootout loss. 1974–75 NHL Season
The 1974–75 NHL season was the 58th season of the National Hockey League. Two new teams, the Washington Capitals and Kansas City Scouts were added, increasing the number of teams to 18. To accommodate the new teams, the NHL re-organized its divisional structure and playoff format. The regular season was expanded to 80 games per team (which would be the case until 1992–93). The Philadelphia Flyers won the Stanley Cup for the second consecutive year. League business With the addition of two new teams, the Washington Capitals and Kansas City Scouts, the NHL bumped up the number of games from 78 to 80 and split the previously two-division league into two conferences with four divisions. 1930–31 NHL Season
The 1930–31 NHL season was the 14th season of the National Hockey League. Ten teams played 44 games each. The Montreal Canadiens beat the Chicago Black Hawks three games to two in the best-of-five Stanley Cup Finals for their second consecutive Stanley Cup victory. League business Art Ross bitterly complained about the Stanley Cup final setup. His team had been vanquished in two consecutive games by the Montreal Canadiens in 1929–30. As a result, the Board of Governors decided to make the final a best-of-five series. The Great Depression was starting to take its toll on the NHL. In attempts to solve financial problems, the Pittsburgh Pirates moved to Philadelphia and became the Philadelphia Quakers, but there was nothing about the team to win games or fans. 1930–31 Philadelphia Quakers Season
The 1930–31 Philadelphia Quakers season was the Quakers' sole season in the National Hockey League (NHL). The team moved from Pittsburgh, where they had played as the Pittsburgh Pirates since 1925. Offseason The team relocated to Philadelphia and was in the charge of Benny Leonard, the prizefighter who held the world lightweight title from 1917 to 1925. On October 18, 1930, 13 players, including player-coach Frank Fredrickson, were transferred to the Quakers from Pittsburgh. But Fredrickson was released two days later and replaced by Cooper Smeaton, who resigned his position as the league’s referee-in-chief to become the Quakers head coach. Regular season The team finished with 12 points for the season, the worst performance in the six-year history of the Pirate/Quaker franchise. The 2022–23 Colorado Avalanche season was the 44th season for the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise that joined the league in 1979, 27th playing season since the franchise relocated from Quebec prior to the start of the 1995–96 NHL season, and 51st season overall, including their play in the World Hockey Association (WHA), where the franchise was established in 1972. San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks are a professional ice hockey team based in San Jose, California. They compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Pacific Division in the Western Conference, and are owned by San Jose Sports & Entertainment Enterprises. Beginning play in the 1991–92 season, the Sharks initially played their home games at the Cow Palace, before moving to their present home, now named SAP Center at San Jose, in 1993; the SAP Center is known locally as "the Shark Tank". 1992–93 Winnipeg Jets Season
The 1992–93 Winnipeg Jets season was the Jets' 21st season, their 14th in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Jets qualified for the playoffs, losing in the first round. Winnipeg was not shut out in any of their regular-season games or playoff games. Offseason On June 20, 1992, the Jets and Chicago Blackhawks made a trade at the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, as the Jets acquired the Blackhawks 17th and 27th overall picks for the Jets 12th and 36th overall picks. With their first round, 17th overall pick at the draft, Winnipeg selected Sergei Bautin from Dynamo Moscow. Bautin, a defenceman, had 1 goal and 4 points in 37 games with Dynamo. The 1992–93 Montreal Canadiens season was the team's 76th season in the National Hockey League (NHL) and their 84th overall. Coming off of a disappointing second round playoff exit against the Boston Bruins during the 1991–92 season, the third-straight season Boston had defeated Montreal in the playoffs, the Canadiens were champions for the 1992–93 season.
