Rector (academia)
A rector (Latin for 'ruler') is a senior official in an educational institution, and can refer to an official in either a university or a secondary school. Outside the English-speaking world the rector is often the most senior official in a university, whilst in the United States the most senior official is often referred to as president and in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth of Nations the most senior official is the chancellor, whose office is primarily ceremonial and titular. Middle East Technical University
Middle East Technical University (commonly referred to as METU; in Turkish language, Turkish, ''Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi'', ODTÜ) is a public university, public Institute of technology, technical university located in Ankara, Turkey. Turhan Feyzioğlu
Turhan Feyzioğlu (1922 – 24 March 1988) was a Turkish academic and a politician. Early life He was born in Kayseri. After finishing the primary school in Kayseri, he studied in Galatasaray High School and in Law school of Istanbul University. After post graduate studies in United Kingdom, he returned to Turkey and became a professor of Ankara University. In 1955, he was elected as the dean of Political Sciences School in Ankara University. He also began writing in the bulletin of his school. His articles however irritated the Democrat Party government and he had to resign. Although in 1960–1961 term he briefly returned to academics and served as the rector of Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara, his main area of interest was politics. Seha Meray
Seha Meray (1921–1978) was a Turkish academic. He was born in Istanbul. After graduating from Galatasaray High School in 1940, he studied in the Faculty of Political Sciences of Ankara University. In 1944 he graduated from the faculty and became an academic in the same faculty. In 1948 he became the associate professor and in 1954 professor of International law. Between 23.02.1961 and 5.08.1961 he was elected as the rector of Middle East Technical University. He went to Canada and lectured on Space Law in McGill University as a visiting professor. Erdal İnönü
Erdal İnönü (6 June 1926 – 31 October 2007) was a Turkish theoretical physicist and politician, who served as the interim Prime Minister of Turkey between 16 May and 25 June 1993. He also served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey from 1991 to 1993 and as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from March to October 1995. He served as the leader of the Social Democracy Party (SODEP) from 1983 to 1985 and later the Social Democratic Populist Party (SHP) from 1986 to 1993. He was the son of the 2nd President of Turkey, İsmet İnönü. İnönü initially founded the SODEP in 1983 with the intention of contesting the 1983 general election. Tariq ( ar, طارق) is an Arabic word and given name. Etymology The word is derived from the Arabic verb , ('), meaning "to strike", and into the agentive conjugated doer form , ('), meaning "striker". It became popular as a name after Tariq ibn Ziyad, a Muslim military leader who conquered Iberia in the Battle of Guadalete in 711 AD. In literature and placenames Ṭariq is used in classical Arabic to refer to a visitor at night (a visitor "strikes" the house door). Due to the heat of travel in the Arabian Peninsula, visitors would generally arrive at night. Nuri Saryal (2 September 1929 - 22 December 2020) was a Turkish educator of the Azerbaijani origin. He served as rector of Middle East Technical University from 1977 to 1979. Early life He was born in Baku, Azerbaijan SSR as the son of Ismail and Helena (née Hoffmann) Seyitzade. He became a Turkish citizen in 1931, when the family name changed to Saryal. In 1947 he graduated from Atatürk Gymnasium in Ankara. From 1947–1948 he attended English medium prep school. In 1952 he graduated from Robert College Engineering School B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering. Ural Akbulut (born 1945) is a professor of chemistry at METU. He had been METU's president from 2002 to 2008. During his presidency, he was involved in a debate with Melih Gökçek regarding the water problem of Ankara.
