List Of Michigan Wolverines Men's Basketball Seasons
This is a list of seasons completed by the Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team. The team played its first game in January 1909. Michigan's highest-scoring team, measured in points per game, was the 1965–66 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team, 1965–66 team led by Cazzie Russell, which averaged 91.9 points per game. The program's only national championship was won by the 1988–89 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team, 1988–89 team led by Glen Rice, which averaged 91.7 points per game. Seasons : Fisher served as interim coach during the 1989 NCAA tournament after Bill Frieder resigned. 1965–66 Michigan Wolverines Men's Basketball Team
The 1965–66 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team represented the University of Michigan in intercollegiate college basketball during the 1965–66 season. The team played its home games at Fielding H. Yost Field House (renamed Yost Ice Arena in 1973) on the school's campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Under the direction of head coach Dave Strack, the team won the Big Ten Conference Championship. Season review This was the last of three consecutive Big Ten titles and NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament appearances. The team earned the Big Ten team statistical championships for both scoring offense (95.4) and scoring margin (9.9) as well as field goal percentage (48.9). 1937–38 Michigan Wolverines Men's Basketball Team
The 1937–38 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team represented the University of Michigan in intercollegiate basketball during the 1937–38 season. The team scored 740 points in 20 games for an average of 37.0 points per game—the second highest point total and scoring per game in school history. Despite prolific scoring for the era, Michigan finished in a tie for fifth in the Big Ten Conference. The team compiled a 9–1 record in the first half of the season, including a six-game winning streak at the start of the season. However, the team went 3–7 in the second half of the season for a season record of 12–8, and 6–6 against Big Ten opponents. One of the highlights of the season was a tour of the east during the winter break. Michigan played and defeated Maryland, Rochester, and a highly touted Dartmouth team on the trip. The 1936–37 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team represented the University of Michigan in intercollegiate basketball during the 1936–37 season. The team compiled a 16–4 record, and 9–3 against Big Ten Conference opponents. The team scored 741 points in 20 games for an average of 37.1 points per game – the highest point total and scoring per game in school history up to that time. Michigan finished in third place in the Big Ten. The team opened the season with a 61–12 victory over Michigan Normal (now known as Eastern Michigan University), setting a new scoring record at Yost Field House. During the winter break, the team traveled to Seattle, Washington, to play three games against the University of Washington. Team captain Johnny Gee (who later played professional baseball and basketball), was unavailable to play during the west coast trip due to a broken nose. Alfred Plummer was the team captain, and Richard Joslin was the team's leading scorer with 71 points in 18 games for an average of 3.9 points per game. The team's second leading scorer, Johnny Gee, went on to play as a pitcher in Major League Baseball from 1939 to 1946. Franklin Cappon
Franklin C. "Cappy" Cappon (October 17, 1900 – November 29, 1961) was an American college football and college basketball player and coach. He played football and basketball at Phillips University and the University of Michigan and coached at Luther College (1923–1924), the University of Kansas (1926–1927), the University of Michigan (1925, 1928–1938), and Princeton University (1938–1961). The son of a wealthy leather manufacturer in Holland, Michigan, Cappon was a star athlete in both basketball and football, and was named to All-Western football teams in 1920, 1921, and 1922. Before accepting a position at Princeton, Cappon was an assistant athletic director and basketball coach at Michigan from 1928 to 1938. In 23 years at Princeton, Cappon won five Ivy League championships, and his trademark "five-man weave" offense became closely identified with the program.
