Mauritians (singular Mauritian; french: Mauricien; Creole: ''Morisien'') are nationals or natives of the Republic of Mauritius and their descendants. Mauritius is a multi-ethnic society, with notable groups of people of South Asian (notably Indian), Sub-Saharan African (Mauritian Creoles), European (European Mauritians), and Chinese descent, as well those of a mixed background from any combination of the aforementioned ethnic groups. History Mauritian Creoles trace their origins to the plantation owners and people who were captured via the slave trade and brought to work the sugar fields. Plantation owners were predominantly of European ancestry while the enslaved people mostly had ancestry from continental Africa. When slavery was abolished on 1 February 1835, an attempt was made to secure a cheap source of adaptable labour for intensive sugar plantations in Mauritius. Cassam Uteem
Cassam Uteem, GCSK (born in Port Louis on 22 March 1941) is a Mauritian political figure who served as the second president of Mauritius from 30 June 1992 to 15 February 2002. He is the longest served president of Mauritius, having served for nearly ten years. Early life and education Cassam Uteem attended the secondary school Royal College Port Louis. Then he travelled to France and studied at Paris VII University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Art and a master's degree in Psychology. He also holds a Certificate in Social Work from the University of Mauritius and a "Diplôme d’État Français d’Assistant des services sociaux". Ancestry and family life In the 1800s Cassam Uteem's ancestors migrated from the historic city of Azamgarh's Village Dubawan, Uttar Pradesh in India. Rodrigues (island)
Rodrigues (french: Île Rodrigues, link=yes ; Creole: ) is a autonomous outer island of the Republic of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, about east of Mauritius. It is part of the Mascarene Islands, which include Mauritius and Réunion. Rodrigues is of volcanic origin and is surrounded by coral reef, and some tiny uninhabited islands lie just off its coast. The island used to be the tenth District of Mauritius; it gained autonomous status on 10 December 2002, and it is governed by the Rodrigues Regional Assembly. The capital of the island is Port Mathurin. The islands of Rodrigues, Agaléga and Saint Brandon form part of the larger territory of the Republic of Mauritius. Serge Clair
Louis Serge Clair (born April 1, 1940) was the Chief Commissioner of Rodrigues from February 4, 2003 until 4 August 2006, and former minister of Rodrigues. A charismatic and visionary leader, Serge Clair, in the 1960s, abandoned priesthood to pursue a career in politics. He went to Australia to further his studies. After his studies, he returned to Rodrigues to engage actively in politics. Serge Clair founded his party, the Rodrigues People's Organisation (or OPR) in 1976. Quickly enough, he grew in popularity, and in 1982, his party won a seat in the general assembly of Mauritius for the first time. He won the elections in 1983, 1987, 1991, 1995 and 2000. In 2002, he resigned from the assembly to run in the Rodrigues regional election. Sangeet Fowdar
Sangeet Fowdar FCCA, MP (born 5 September 1957) is a Fellow Member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA) and Mauritian politician, serving as a Member of Parliament for Grand Baie & Poudre d'Or, Mauritius. He is a member of the Public Accounts Committee and the parliamentary representative for Mauritius at the World Trade Organization. Fowdar previously served as the Ministry of Training, Skills, Development, Productivity and External Communications of Mauritius in the cabinet of Sir Anerood Jugnauth from 2000 to 2003 and Paul Berenger from 2003 to 2005. He was first elected as Member of Parliament for Flacq & Bon Accueil in 2000, the constituency of former Vice-Prime Minister Anil Bachoo, where he was a Cabinet Minister. Ahmed Rashid Beebeejaun, GCSK (born on 22 December 1934) is a former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Utilities of Mauritius. He was the Deputy leader of the Mauritian Labor Party and was the first person to hold office of Prime Minister in the Mauritius line of Succession during Navin Ramgoolam's tenure as Prime Minister. Navin Ramgoolam appointed Beebeejaun on 7 July 2005 as deputy prime minister after winning the 2005 general elections. He was born in Riviere du Rempart and was a doctor and practitioner in Mauritius before entering politics. In 2007 he was elevated to the rank of Grand Commander of the Star And Key of Indian Ocean by the then President of the country Sir Anerood Jugnauth. Raouf Bundhun
Abdool Raouf Bundhun (born 14 January 1937) who served as the third vice president of Mauritius from 2002 to 2007. He was elected by National Assembly of Mauritius on 25 February 2002 for a term of five years. Prior to assuming office he had been Mauritius' ambassador to France. He has also been the member of National Assembly of Mauritius for two terms; from 1967 to 1976 and 1995 to 2000. From 1969 to 1975 he had been the Minister for youth and sports and appointed parliamentary secretary by Seewoosagur Ramgoolam in 1969. In 1976 he became the minister of energy of Mauritius. Rabindranath Ghurburrun
Sir Rabindrah Ghurburrun (Tamil: சர் இரவீந்திர குருபரன்) (1928–2008) was the first Vice President of Mauritius from 1992 to 1997. He started his political career as a member of the Mauritius Labour Party. However, he was appointed by the Mauritian Militant Movement-Militant Socialist Movement coalition government as vice president while the Labour Party was in the opposition. A lawyer by profession, he did a diploma at the University of Oxford. He was also the first High Commissioner of Mauritius to India. Agnès Monique Ohsan Bellepeau GOSK (born 1942) is a Mauritian politician and was the fourth vice president of Mauritius from November 2010 to April 2016. She was acting president of Mauritius from 31 March 2012 to 21 July 2012 when Sir Anerood Jugnauth resigned up to the inauguration of Kailash Purryag to the office. She was again acting president from 29 May 2015 to 5 June 2015 when Kailash Purryag resigned up to the inauguration of Ameenah Gurib to the office. Louis Joseph Coralie (1912–1967) was a Mauritian politician. Participation at 1953 and 1959 elections He stood as a candidate in the 1953 Mauritius Legislative Council elections in Grand Port-Savanne but was defeated by Sookdeo Bissoondoyal, Goinsamy Venkatasamy and Louis Philippe Rozemont. Karl Offmann
Karl Auguste Offmann, GCSK (25 November 1940 – 12 March 2022) was a Mauritian politician who briefly served as the president of Mauritius from 2002 to 2003. After two of his successive predecessors had resigned over their refusal to sign a controversial anti-terrorism bill, the parliament elected Offmann to serve as the third president on 25 February 2002. He served in the post until Paul Bérenger became his prime minister and nominated a new president on 1 October 2003.
