Lima Locomotive Works was an American firm that manufactured railroad locomotives from the 1870s through the 1950s. The company took the most distinctive part of its name from its main shop's location in Lima, Ohio. The shops were located between the Erie Railroad main line, the Baltimore & Ohio's Cincinnati-Toledo main line and the Nickel Plate Road main line and shops. The company is best known for producing the Shay geared logging-steam locomotive, developed by Ephraim Shay, and for William E. Woodard's "Super Power" advanced steam locomotive concept – exemplified by the prototype 2-8-4 Berkshire, Lima demonstrator A-1. AAR Wheel Arrangement
The AAR wheel arrangement system is a method of classifying locomotive (or unit) wheel arrangements that was developed by the Association of American Railroads. Essentially a simplification of the European UIC classification, it is widely used in North America to describe Diesel locomotive, diesel and electric locomotives (including third-rail electric locomotives). It is not used for steam locomotives, which use the Whyte notation instead. The AAR system counts axles instead of wheels. Letters refer to powered axles, and numbers to unpowered (or idler) axles. "A" refers to one powered axle, "B" to two powered axles in a row, "C" to three powered axles in a row, and "D" to four powered axles in a row. "1" refers to one idler axle, and "2" to two idler axles in a row. A dash ("–") separates Bogie, trucks or wheel assemblies. Lima 750 And 800 Hp Switchers
The A-3149 (LS-750) and A-3171 (LS-800) were diesel-electric switching locomotives built between November 1949 and June 1951, by the Lima-Hamilton Corporation of Lima, Ohio, U.S.A.. The A-3149 is a switcher. It was later upgraded to by changing fuel rack settings. Both models used the same turbocharged Hamilton T69SA four-stroke, six cylinder inline diesel engine, a Westinghouse generator and 4 Westinghouse traction motors. All six A-3149’s were sold to a single railroad, Cincinnati Union Terminal (CUT class DES-10w) with two (#24-25) being sold after the A-3171 had been introduced. The 23 A-3171’s were sold to just two railroads, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific bought 2, and Chicago River and Indiana (a subsidiary of the New York Central System, CR&I class DES-19a) bought 21. The A-3174 (LRS-1200) was a model of 1,200 hp (895 kW) B-B diesel locomotive built by Lima-Hamilton in 1950. All sixteen units were built for the New York Central. Lima LT-2500
The A-3177 (LT-2500) was a diesel-electric transfer-unit locomotive, built by the Lima-Hamilton Corporation between 1950 and 1951. The A-3177 was the final locomotive model produced by Lima-Hamilton before the company merged with the Baldwin Locomotive Works in September 1951 to form the Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton Corporation (BLH). All twenty-two units were ordered by the Pennsylvania Railroad, with the last one, #5683, completed on September 12th 1951, the day after BLH was formed. All were scrapped, with the last three being retired by 1967. The PRR ordered 22 more but agreed to receive 23 RT-624s from BLH instead.
