The title of Knight Bachelor is the basic rank granted to a man who has been knighted by the monarch but not inducted as a member of one of the organised orders of chivalry; it is a part of the British honours system. Knights Bachelor are the most ancient sort of British knight (the rank existed during the 13th-century reign of King Henry III), but Knights Bachelor rank below knights of chivalric orders. Arthur Quiller-Couch
Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch (; 21 November 186312 May 1944) was a British writer who published using the pseudonym Q. Although a prolific novelist, he is remembered mainly for the monumental publication '' The Oxford Book of English Verse 1250–1900'' (later extended to 1918) and for his literary criticism. He influenced many who never met him, including American writer Helene Hanff, author of ''84, Charing Cross Road'' and its sequel, ''Q's Legacy''. His ''Oxford Book of English Verse'' was a favourite of John Mortimer fictional character Horace Rumpole. Life Arthur Quiller-Couch was born in the town of Bodmin, Cornwall. Clarendon Hyde
Sir Clarendon Golding Hyde (5 February 1858 – 24 June 1934) was a British businessman and Liberal Party politician. He sat in the House of Commons from 1906 to 1910, but his most significant public service was his participation in numerous government committees. Early life Hyde was educated at the Royal Institution School in Liverpool and at King's College London, and was called to the bar in 1881 at the Middle Temple. He joined the Oxford Circuit, but soon gave up his law practice. Career Hyde unsuccessfully contested Southampton at the 1900 general election. He was elected at the 1906 general election as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the borough Wednesbury in Staffordshire. Alfred Hopkinson
Sir Alfred Hopkinson (28 June 1851 – 11 November 1939) was an English lawyer, academic and politician who served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for two three-year periods, separated by nearly thirty years. He was the son of John Hopkinson, a mechanical engineer, and among his brothers were John Hopkinson, a physicist and electrical engineer, and Edward Hopkinson, an electrical engineer and MP. He first stood for election to the House of Commons at the 1885 general election, when he was the unsuccessful Liberal Party candidate in Manchester East. He was unsuccessful again as a Liberal Unionist candidate at the 1892 general election, when he stood in Manchester South-West. Sir Edward Hain, (26 December 1851 – 20 September 1917) was an English shipping magnate and politician from Cornwall, England. George Malcolm Fox
Colonel Sir George Malcolm Fox (4 March 1843 – 10 March 1918) was Inspector General of Gymnasia at Aldershot, (1890-1897) and Director of Physical Training at the Military School, Aldershot. Early life Fox was born in Derby in Derbyshire in 1843, one of six children born to Marianne ''née'' Strutt (1814–1898) and Douglas Fox (1798–1885), a magistrate and surgeon. He was educated at Rossall School and Brighton College before joining the army. Fox began his military career serving with the 100th (Prince of Wales's Royal Canadian) Regiment of Foot from 1863-1875, being promoted to Lieutenant in 1865 and Captain in 1871. Alfred East
Sir Alfred Edward East (15 December 1844 – 28 September 1913) was an English painter. Life East was born in Kettering in Northamptonshire and studied at the Glasgow School of Art. His romantic landscapes show the influence of the Barbizon school. His ''The Art of Landscape Painting in Oil Colour'' was published in 1906. In April 1888 he had shared an exhibition at the galleries of the Fine Art Society with T.C. Gotch and W. Ayerst Ingram, and was commissioned the following year by Marcus Huish, managing director of the Society, to spend six months in Japan to paint the landscape and the people of the country.
