Indians In Kenya
Indians in Kenya, often known as Kenyan Asians, are citizens and residents of Kenya with ancestral roots in the Indian subcontinent. Significant Indian migration to modern-day Kenya began following the creation of the British East Africa Protectorate in 1895, which had strong infrastructure links with Bombay in British India. Indians in Kenya predominantly live in the major urban areas of Nairobi and Mombasa, with a minority living in rural areas. According to the World Economic Forum, the population of Indians in Kenya numbered around 100,000 in 2015. In 2017, Indians were recognised by the government of Kenya as the nation's 44th tribe. Alibhai Mulla Jeevanjee
Alibhai Mulla Jeevanjee (1856– 2 May 1936) was an Indian-born Kenyan merchant, politician and philanthropist. He was amongst the first and most influential Indian settlers in Kenya, amassing significant wealth and becoming a leader of Kenya's Indian community. Fitz Remedios Santana De Souza
Fitzval Remedios Santana Neville de Souza (1929 – 23 March 2020), often known as Dr. F. R. S. de Souza and Fitz de Souza, was a Kenyan lawyer and politician who was an important figure in the campaign for independence for Kenya, a member of the Kenyan parliament in the 1960s and Deputy Speaker for several years. He helped provide a legal defence for those accused of Mau Mau activities including the Kapenguria Six, and he was one of the people involved in the Lancaster House conferences held to draw up a constitutional framework for Kenyan independence. Manilal Ambalal Desai
Manilal Ambalal Desai (1878 – 26 July 1926) was an Indian born activist and journalist who played a prominent role in Kenyan politics during the 1920s. Early life Desai was born to a family of landowners in Surat, part of the Bombay Presidency of British India. He was educated at the Mission High School and began his career as clerk at a law firm in Bombay. Mohamed Ismail Shams-ud-Deen (1879 - 27 December 1948) was an Indian born member of the Legislative Council of Kenya between 1922 and 1946. Isher Dass
Isher Dass (1900 – 6 November 1942) was an Indian born member of the Legislative Council of Kenya between 1933 and his death in 1942. He was the first member of the Legislative Council to be assassinated. Early life Dass was born in the Punjab, British India, to a Hindu Punjabi family. Abdul Majid Cockar
Abdul Majid Cockar (3 February 1936 – 31 October 2016 ) was a Kenyan lawyer and the Chief Justice of Kenya. He served from 1994 to 1997 and was succeeded by Zacchaeus Chesoni. He was born in Amritsar, Punjab, British India. In 1938 he passed the Senior Cambridge Examination and joined the Kenya Department of Education as a teacher. He moved to the United Kingdom and completed the Post Graduate Teachers Diploma in Education in 1945. The following year he completed the Post Graduate Diploma in Law. He returned to Kenya in 1953 and enrolled as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. The same year he set up the law firm Cockar & Cockar Advocates with his younger brother Saeed. He was appointed a Senior Resident Magistrate in 1961 and Chairperson of the Rent Restriction Tribunal in 1974. He was later made a Judge of the High Court and Court of Appeal.
