Yakuza Film
is a popular film genre in Japanese cinema which focuses on the lives and dealings of ''yakuza'', Japanese organized crime syndicates. In the silent film era, depictions of ''bakuto'' (precursors to modern yakuza) as sympathetic Robin Hood-like characters were common. Two types of yakuza films emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. The Nikkatsu studio was known for modern yakuza films inspired by Hollywood gangster films, while Toei was the main producer of what is known as . Set in the Meiji and Taishō eras, ''ninkyo eiga'' depict honorable outlaws torn between '' giri'' (duty) and ''ninjo'' (personal feelings). In contrast to ''ninkyo eiga'', based on real crime stories became popular in the 1970s. Eiji Funakoshi
was a Japanese actor. He received the Kinema Junpo Award for Best Actor and the Mainichi Film Concours for Best Actor for his performance in '' Fires on the Plain''. Biography Born Eijirō Funakoshi on 17 March 1923, in Tokyo, Eiji Funakoshi signed up for the Daiei Motion Picture Company in 1947 and made his acting debut the following year with ''Beautiful Enemy''. In a career that spanned three decades Funakoshi starred in a variety of genres and worked for directors Kōzaburō Yoshimura, Mikio Naruse, Kon Ichikawa and Yasuzo Masumura. Funakoshi was a favorite actor of internationally renowned director Kon Ichikawa. Perhaps their most notable film was the World War II drama '' Fires on the Plain'' (Nobi, 1959). Blind Beast
, aka ''Moju the Blind Beast'' is a 1969 Japanese film directed by Yasuzo Masumura. It is based on a novel by Edogawa Rampo. Plot Young aspiring model Aki Shima is kidnapped by a mysterious blind man and taken to his home in a warehouse, which is filled with sculptures of human body parts and female figures. The blind man, Michio Sofu, is a sculptor who wishes to use Aki as an unwilling muse for his greatest work. As her time in captivity wears on, Aki soon becomes enraptured by her blind captor and the two soon become lovers, beginning a series of Sadomasochistic games. In the end Aki agrees to become something more than just the inspiration for his masterpiece, becoming the art piece itself, to which Michio agrees. After killing and dismembering Aki, Michio "sculpts" her corpse into a macabre work of art. Seeing his life's work complete, Michio then commits suicide. Keiju Kobayashi
was a Japanese actor who appeared in 253 films in a career spanning 67 years. Born in Gunma Prefecture, he began acting at the Nikkatsu studio after dropping out of Nihon University and made his film debut in 1942. In 1956 he moved to Toho film company. In a career that spanned 65 years, he appeared in over 250 films, most famously in the "Company President" (Shachō) comedy films made at Toho, where he worked alongside Hisaya Morishige, Daisuke Katō, Norihei Miki, and others. There he helped define the popular image of the postwar salaryman. He also won many awards for his acting, including best actor awards at the Mainichi Film Awards for '' The Naked General'' in 1958 (where he played Kiyoshi Yamashita), for '' Kuroi gashū'' in 1960, and for ''The Elegant Life of Mr Everyman'' in 1963. Hisaya Morishige
was a Japanese actor and comedian. Born in Hirakata, Osaka, he graduated from Kitano Middle School (now Kitano High School), and attended Waseda University. He began his career as a stage actor, then became an announcer for NHK, working in Manchukuo. He became famous in films first for comedy roles, appearing in series such as the "Company President" (''Shacho'') and "Station Front" (''Ekimae'') series, produced by Toho. He appeared in nearly 250 films, both contemporary and ''jidaigeki''. He was also famous on stage playing Tevye in the Japanese version of Fiddler on the Roof. He also appeared in television series and specials, and was the first guest on the television talk show ''Tetsuko's Room'' in 1975. He was long-time head of the Japan Actors Union. Among many honors, Morishige received the Order of Culture from the Emperor of Japan in 1991. Hisaya Morishige died of natural causes at a hospital in Tokyo at 8:16 A.M. on November 10, 2009, at the age of 96. Filmography ... The Drifters (Japanese Band)
are a Japanese rock and roll band and comedy group. The band formed as "Sons of Drifters" around 1956 from two bands "Mountain Boys" and "Tokyo Western Boys". However, members in the group changed back and forth occasionally. Chosuke Ikariya became the group's leader in 1964. Although the band became famous as a comedy group under Ikariya, they took part in the Kōhaku Uta Gassen as a musical band for the first time in 2001. Ikariya died of lymph node cancer in 2004 at the age of 72. The group is also known for its 40-second performance as an opening act for The Beatles' first ever concert in Japan.
