Van Meter, Iowa
Van Meter is a city in Dallas County, Iowa, United States, situated along the Raccoon River. The population was 1,484 at the time of the 2020 census. Van Meter is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Van Meter was laid out as a town in 1869. The city was named for Jacob Rhodes Van Meter and his family, Dutch settlers from Meteren, the Netherlands. Van Meter was incorporated on December 29, 1877. Bellevue, Iowa
Bellevue ( ) is a city in eastern Jackson County, Iowa, United States. The city lies along the Mississippi River (at Lock and Dam No. 12) and next to Bellevue State Park. In 2020 its population was 2,363; up from a count of 2,191 at the 2010 Census, making it the second-largest and only growing city in Jackson County. The city lies in a valley created by two large bluffs (known as North and South Bluffs respectively), with the Mississippi River serving as the city's eastern border (the Illinois state border), and with the Mill Creek valley extending to the west. Jackson County, Iowa
Jackson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 19,485. The county seat is Maquoketa. History The county was formed on December 21, 1837, and named after US President Andrew Jackson. In the early morning of July 22, 2022, an assailant killed three members of a family at the campground of Maquoketa Caves State Park, located in the county. The assailant, identified as 23-year-old Anthony Sherwin of Nebraska, later committed suicide. Bellevue State Park (Iowa)
Bellevue State Park is a state park of Iowa, USA, along the banks of the Mississippi River just south of Bellevue. The park lies in two separate tracts. The Nelson Unit is at the immediate south edge of Bellevue on U.S. Route 52 (The Great River Road), atop a limestone bluff. The Dyas Unit is farther south on U.S. 52. Bellevue State Park offers high bluffs with scenic views of the Mississippi River amidst of timbered walking trails, a unique butterfly sanctuary as well as an enclosed nature center. Picnicking/shelters Picnickers at the Nelson Unit can enjoy views of the Mississippi River. Open picnic shelters may be reserved for a fee. The lodge is available on a reservation basis for wedding receptions and other family events. The lodge and open shelters may be reserved online through the park reservation system. Causeway
A causeway is a track, road or railway on the upper point of an embankment across "a low, or wet place, or piece of water". It can be constructed of earth, masonry, wood, or concrete. Beed's Lake State Park
Beeds Lake State Park is located northwest of Hampton, Iowa, United States. It was listed has a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places as Beeds Lake State Park, Civilian Conservation Corps Area in 1990. At the time of its nomination it contained 21 resources, which included one contributing building, 15 contributing structures, and five non-contributing structures. The park surrounds a reservoir. It features hiking trails, boating, fishing, swimming, camping, picnic areas and shelters, lodges and concessions. History Springbrook Creek was dammed and a sawmill was built in 1857. A flour mill was established two years later. The property was bought by William Beed in 1864 and he continued the operation until 1903-1904. Open-pit mining, also known as open-cast or open-cut mining and in larger contexts mega-mining, is a surface mining technique of extracting rock or minerals from the earth from an open-air pit, sometimes known as a borrow. This form of mining differs from extractive methods that require tunnelling into the earth, such as long wall mining.
