Oki Province
was a province of Japan consisted of the Oki Islands in the Sea of Japan, located off the coast of the provinces of Izumo and Hōki. The area is now Oki District in modern Shimane Prefecture. Okinoshima, Shimane
is a town located on Dōgo, in Oki District, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. As of June 2013, the town had an estimated population of 14,849 and a population density of 61.1 persons per km2. The total area was 242.95 km2. Etymology Okinoshima Town takes its name from Okinoshima, the traditional name for all four inhabited Oki Islands. There is no single island named Okinoshima. History Okinoshima Town was formed from the merger of the town of Saigō, and the villages of Fuse, Goka and Tsuma on October 1, 2004, all from Oki District. Ijimi Ichirizuka
The is a historic Japanese distance marker akin to a milestone, comprising a pair of earthen mounds located in what is now the Shinji neighborhood of the city of Matsue, Shimane Prefecture in the San'in region of Japan. It was designated a National Historic Site of Japan in 1937. Overview During the Edo period the Tokugawa shogunate established ''ichirizuka'' on major roads, enabling calculation both of distance travelled and of the charge for transportation by '' kago'' or palanquin. These mounds denoted the distance in '' ri'' () typically to Nihonbashi, the "Bridge of Japan", erected in Edo in 1603. They were typically planted with an ''enoki'' or Japanese red pine to provide shelter for travelers. Since the Meiji period, most of the ''ichirizuka'' have disappeared, having been destroyed by the elements, modern highway construction and urban encroachment. Yasugi, Shimane
is a city located in Shimane Prefecture, Japan. As of March 1, 2017, the city has an estimated population of 38,875 and a population density of 92 persons per km². The total area is . History The ruins of Gassantoda Castle are in Yasugi. According to legend, the goddess Izanami was buried here. In Shinto, both holy and negative concept exists. The city was an ancient steel-making (tatara) center. The Yasugi Steel brand name bears the name of the city, and was established by Hitachi Metals, Ltd. Yasugi was elevated to city status on April 4, 1954. On October 1, 2004, the towns of Hakuta and Hirose (both from Nogi District) were merged into Yasugi.
