Established in 1863, Hampshire County Cricket Club has played first-class cricket from 1864 to 1885 and from 1895 to present. It has taken part in every edition County Championship since 1895. Hampshire County Cricket Club
Hampshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Hampshire. Hampshire teams formed by earlier organisations, principally the Hambledon Club, always had first-class status and the same applied to the county club when it was founded in 1863. Because of poor performances for several seasons until 1885, Hampshire then lost its status for nine seasons until it was invited into the County Championship in 1895, since when the team have played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. Hampshire originally played at the Antelope Ground, Southampton until 1885 when they relocated to the County Ground, Southampton until 2000, before moving to the purpose-built Rose Bowl in West End, which is in the Borough of Eastleigh. George Brown (cricketer, Born 1887)
George Brown (6 October 1887 – 3 December 1964) was an English cricketer who played in seven Test matches between 1921 and 1923. George Brown was born in Cowley, Oxfordshire, the son of Edwin Brown and Sarah Ann (née Casey). As his figures indicate, he was a very versatile cricketer, being useful as batsman, bowler and wicketkeeper. 2011 County Championship
The 2011 County Championship season, known as the LV County Championship for sponsorship reasons, was the 112th cricket County Championship season. It was contested through two divisions: Division One and Division Two. Each team played all the others in their division both home and away. Lancashire won Division One. The top two teams from Division Two were promoted to the first division for the 2012 season, while the bottom two sides from Division One were relegated. Aggregate attendances rose 9% to 531,000. County Ground, Taunton
The County Ground, known for sponsorship reasons as Cooper Associates County Ground, and nicknamed Ciderabad, is a cricket ground in Taunton, Somerset. It is the home of Somerset County Cricket Club, who have played there since 1882. The ground, which is located between Priory Bridge Road and St James Street, has a capacity of 8,500. The ground was originally built as part of a sports centre by Taunton Athletic Club in 1881, and became the home of the previously nomadic Somerset County Cricket Club soon after. Having leased the ground for ten years, the club bought the ground in 1896, under the guidance of club secretary Henry Murray-Anderdon. The ground ends are the River End to the north and the Somerset Pavilion End to the south. Somerset County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Somerset. Founded in 1875, Somerset was initially regarded as a minor county until official first-class status was acquired in 1895. Somerset has competed in the County Championship since 1891 and has subsequently played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. Michael Carberry
Michael Alexander Carberry (born 29 September 1980) is an English former professional cricketer who most recently played for Leicestershire County Cricket Club. Carberry is a left-handed opening batsman who bowls occasional right-arm off breaks. Carberry began his career at Surrey, during which time he also played for the Surrey Cricket Board. He played for Surrey from 2001 to 2002, before joining Kent. He played for Kent from 2003 to 2005, before becoming frustrated with his opportunities there. He left Kent at the close of the 2005 season, joined Hampshire for the 2006. Increasingly impressive performances for Hampshire led to international recognition, first with the England Lions, before making his Test debut against Bangladesh on England's 2009–10 tour. James Adams (cricketer, Born 1980)
James Henry Kenneth Adams (born 23 September 1980), known as Jimmy Adams, is an English former professional cricketer. He played as a left-handed batsman and left-arm medium-pace bowler. He first starred for the England Under-19s having previously represented his country at the Under-15 and Under-19 World Cups. Having been named as Hampshire's Young Player of the Year, he captained Loughborough UCCE in 2003 and made his maiden first-class century against Somerset in 2003. He was a member of Hampshire's 2005 Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy winning squad. In 2008, Adams played three Minor Counties fixtures for Dorset. During the 2009 season, Hampshire progressed to win the final of the 2009 Friends Provident Trophy. Chris Smith (cricketer, Born 1958)
Christopher Lyall Smith (born 15 October 1958) was a cricketer for Hampshire and England. He also played one match for Glamorgan in 1979, while playing in the South Wales League, and in South Africa he played for Natal B (then a first-class team). Life and career Born on 15 October 1958 in Durban, South Africa, Smith was unable to play for the South Africa due to their exclusion from international sport because of the apartheid regime, but played for England through his parents nationality. Ironically his opportunity was assisted by the fact that a number of alternative England opening batsmen such as Graham Gooch and Wayne Larkins were banned from international cricket after participating in a rebel tour of South Africa in 1982. Paul Terry (cricketer)
Vivian Paul Terry (born 14 January 1959 in Osnabrück, West Germany) is an English former cricketer, who played in two Tests for England in 1984. Life and career Terry attended Millfield School, leaving in 1977. He was selected to play for England in 1984 at time of low fortunes for the team, when several players who might otherwise have been selected such as Graham Gooch, Wayne Larkins and Geoff Boycott were suspended after participation in a rebel tour of South Africa, and when they were playing the then best team in the world, the West Indies. In the latter of his two Test matches Terry's arm was broken by a rising delivery from Winston Davis. Terry returned to the crease later in the match, with one plastered arm in a sling, to face the feared West Indies fast bowling attack. In doing so, it allowed Allan Lamb to score the two additional runs he needed to notch up his century. Peter Sainsbury
Peter James Sainsbury (13 June 1934 – 12 July 2014) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Hampshire from 1954 to 1976 and the Marylebone Cricket Club from 1955 to 1960. Born in Chandler's Ford, Hampshire, Sainsbury was a right-handed middle-order batsman and a slow left-arm bowler. He was a regular in Hampshire's team for 22 seasons from 1955 to 1976. That period coincided with the county's most successful time in first-class cricket: Hampshire won the County Championship for the first time in 1961 and did it again in 1973. Sainsbury was the only player who featured in both teams, and he was named as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in the 1974 edition of the almanack. After a few games for Hampshire and the first-class Combined Services team in 1954, Sainsbury was a big success in his first full season in 1955, taking 102 wickets and scoring 586 runs. Gordon Greenidge
Sir Cuthbert Gordon Greenidge (born 1 May 1951) is a Barbadian, former first-class cricketer, who represented the West Indies in Test and One-day Cricket for 17 years. Greenidge is regarded worldwide as one of the greatest and most destructive opening batsmen in cricket history. In 2009, Greenidge was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. Early life Born Cuthbert Gordon Lavine in St. Peter, Barbados, he was raised by his mother. At the ages of 8 and 14, he was raised by his grandmother after his mother moved to London (England) to find work.
