This page provides a list of Haitian artists. People on this list were either born in Haiti or possess Haitian citizenship. Due to History of Haitian nationality and citizenship, Haitian nationality laws, dual citizenship is now permitted by the Constitution of Haiti, therefore people of Haitian diaspora, Haitian ancestry born outside of the country are not included in this list, unless they have renounced their foreign citizenship or have resided extensively in Haiti and made significant contributions to Haitian government or society. The list includes both native born and naturalized Haitians, as well as permanent foreign residents who have been recognized internationally for artistic reasons. Gesner Armand
Gesner Armand (11 June 1936 – 10 June 2008) was a Haitian Painting, painter. Born in Croix-des-Bouquets, Armand studied in both Haiti and France and was a member of the Centre d'Art. He was the Director of the Museum of Haitian Art at St. Pierre's College. His paintings, which typically depict peasant life, carnivals, or pigeons, have been exhibited in Mexico, the United States, France, Spain, Jamaica, Martinique, Venezuela, Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, and Israel. Seymour Etienne Bottex
Seymour Etienne Bottex (24 December 1922 - 16 May 2016) was a Haitian painter. Born in Port-Margot, in northern Haiti, Bottex worked as a photographer until 1955 when his older brother Jean-Baptiste encouraged him to begin painting. He joined the Centre d'Art and later the Galerie Issa in Port-au-Prince. His paintings, mingling humorous, historical, and biblical themes, are exhibited worldwide and auctioned at Sotheby's in New York. He is considered one of the finest Haitian naïf painters, and his murals in the Episcopal Cathedral de Sainte Trinité in Port-au-Prince are considered the most important achievement in Haitian modern art. Gérald Bloncourt
Gérald Bloncourt (4 November 1926 – 29 October 2018), also known as Gérard Bloncourt, was a Haitian painter and photographer resident in the suburbs of Paris, France. Born in the small city of Bainet, in Haiti's Sud-Est department, Bloncourt was a founding member of the Centre d'Art. He was involved with ''La Ruche'', a Haitian youth journal of revolutionary art and politics, and was one of the instigators of the revolt which toppled Haitian president Élie Lescot in 1946. Rigaud Benoit
Rigaud Benoit (1911–1986) had become one of the three or four most highly prized Haitian artists well before his death. Early life A native of Port-au-Prince, Benoit had been a shoemaker, musician, and taxi driver before making his living as a painter. He had also supplemented his income by painting pottery pieces he rarely signed or acknowledged. Career Benoit was an early member of the Haitian art movement known as Naive Art, so-called because of its members' limited formal training. The movement was first recognized and promoted by the Centre d'Art, founded in 1944 by the American Quaker and World War II conscientious objector Dewitt Peters. According to a widely repeated story, Benoit was working as Peters's chauffeur in 1944 when he saw some of the first works displayed at the Centre d'Art.
