Curtis Cup
The Curtis Cup is the best known team trophy for women amateur golfers, awarded in the biennial Curtis Cup Match. It is co-organised by the United States Golf Association and The R&A and is contested by teams representing the United States and "Great Britain and Ireland". The same two teams originally contested the Ryder Cup, but unlike that competition, the Curtis Cup has not widened the Great Britain and Ireland team to include all Europeans (nor has the analogous event for amateur men, the Walker Cup). Many women who have gone on to become stars of women's professional golf have played in the Curtis Cup. History The first Curtis Cup Match was played in 1932 at the Wentworth Club in England, and was won by the American team. Fiona Brown (golfer)
Fiona Mary Haddon Brown (later Champness, born 13 February 1974) was an English amateur golfer. She won the 1994 English Women's Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship and the 1999 English Women's Amateur Championship. She played in the Curtis Cup in 1998 and 2000. Golf career Brown won the English girls championship at Coventry in 1992, beating Lorna Nicholson 2&1 in the final. She played for England in the Girls Home Internationals in 1991 and 1992. In 1994 Brown, aged 20, won the English Women's Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Ferndown, four strokes ahead of Kate Egford and Simone Morgan. In 1995 she won the Welsh Women's Open Stroke Play Championship at Newport, beating Alison Rose in a playoff. She was a runner-up in the event the following year, 1996, a stroke behind Emma Duggleby. 2014 Curtis Cup
The 38th Curtis Cup Match was played from June 6 to 8, 2014 at St. Louis Country Club in Ladue, Missouri. The United States won 13 to 7. Format The contest was a three-day competition, with three fourball and three foursomes matches on each of the first two days, and eight singles matches on the final day, a total of 20 points. Each of the 20 matches is worth one point in the larger team competition. If a match is all square after the 18th hole extra holes are not played. Rather, each side earns a point toward their team total. The team that accumulates at least 10 points wins the competition. In the event of a tie, the current holder retains the Cup. Teams Eight players for the USA and Great Britain & Ireland participated in the event plus one non-playing captain for each team. Rebecca Dawn Brewerton (born 20 October 1982) is a Welsh professional golfer and a member of the Ladies European Tour and the LPGA Tour. Amateur career Brewerton was born in St Asaph, Wales. She had a successful amateur career. She was Welsh Girls Champion in 1997 and 1998 and Welsh Ladies' Amateur Champion in 1999 and 2001. Carly Booth (born 21 June 1992) is a Scottish professional golfer. At the end of 2009, aged 17, she became the youngest-ever Scot to qualify for the Ladies European Tour. Booth became the youngest ladies' club champion in Britain at the age of 11 at Dunblane New. Early life Upon turning professional, Booth had a golf scholarship to complete at Glenalmond College in Scotland. She started there after returning from America, where a stay at David Leadbetter's Academy in Florida was followed by a spell at a school in Arizona. Sally Barber ( Bonallack, born 9 April 1938) is an English amateur golfer. She won the English Women's Amateur Championship in 1978 and was twice a runner-up. She won the German women's championship in 1958 and played in the 1962 Curtis Cup. Angela, Lady Bonallack ( Ward; 7 April 1937 – 1 July 2022) was an English amateur golfer. She was twice a finalist in the Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship and won the English Women's Amateur Championship in 1958 and 1963. She played in six successive Curtis Cup matches from 1956 to 1966. She was married to Michael Bonallack. Zara Bolton
Zara Grace Bonner Bolton ( Davis; 1914 – 12 March 1994) was a British-born Irish golfer. She was the Curtis Cup team captain three times leading the team to victory in 1956. Life Bolton moved to Portrush in 1939 after she married. She had visited the Royal Portrush golf club to compete in the British Ladies Amateur Championship and she married an Irish golfer. She had been a member of the Bishop Stortford Golf club before then and an English International based in London. Her husband, Dr Sloane Bolton, lived at Strandmore House, which had one time hosted John F. Kennedy for tea, and that became their home.
