Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM) is a professional organization for engineers and scientists studying the design and implementation of experiments to characterize materials, structures, and systems. Formed in 1943 as the Society for Experimental Stress Analysis (SESA), early work focused on methods such as photoelasticity and strain gages. Wolfgang Gustav Knauss (born December 12, 1933, in Mandel near Bad Kreuznach) is a German-born American engineer. He was Theodore von Kármán Professor of Aeronautics and Applied Mechanics at Caltech . Education Knauss grew up in Siegen during the Second World War as the son of a Methodist pastor. In 1954 he made his Abitur at the Helmholtz Realgymnasium in Heidelberg. After the war, the acquaintance of a Methodist pastor from Pasadena (Frank Williams), who visited the family in Heidelberg, enabled Knauss to attend Pasadena City College and study at Caltech from 1955 with a bachelor's degree in 1958. George Rankin Irwin (February 26, 1907 – October 9, 1998) was an American scientist in the field of fracture mechanics and strength of materials. He was internationally known for his study of fracture of materials. Early life and education George R. Irwin was born in El Paso, Texas. His family moved to Springfield, Illinois where he went to school. He attended Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois and earned an A.B. degree in English in 1930. After an additional year studying physics, he transferred to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he studied from 1931 to 1935. Cesar Sciammarella
Cesar Augusto Sciammarella (born August 22, 1924) is an Argentine civil engineer who made significant contributions to the field of experimental mechanics. In the last decade, he has extended his pioneering developments in moiré, holography, and speckle interferometry methodologies down to the nanometer level. These efforts have enabled optics to be applied beyond the classical Rayleigh limit, reaching the nanometer range. His research is widely used for 3D reconstruction and stress and strain analysis. In his Doctoral Thesis on the moiré method, he extended the Continuum Mechanics model originally developed by Dantu to large deformations. He developed fundamental equations on the properties of moiré fringes and sign conventions. This was an analysis of a non-elastic problem with the moiré method.
