Falconiformes
The order Falconiformes () is represented by the extant family Falconidae (falcons and caracaras) and a handful of enigmatic Paleogene species. Traditionally, the other bird of prey families Cathartidae (New World vultures and condors), Sagittariidae (secretarybird), Pandionidae (ospreys), Accipitridae (hawks) were classified in Falconiformes. A variety of comparative genome analysis published since 2008, however, found that falcons are part of a clade of birds called Australaves, which also includes seriemas, parrots and passerines. Within Australaves falcons are more closely related to the parrot-passerine clade (Psittacopasserae), which together they form the clade Eufalconimorphae. The hawks and vultures occupy a basal branch in the clade Afroaves in their own clade Accipitrimorphae, closer to owls and woodpeckers. Pied Falconet
The pied falconet, (''Microhierax melanoleucos'') is a species of bird of prey in the family Falconidae. It is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Hong Kong, India, Laos, and Vietnam. Its natural habitat is temperate forests. These raptors belong to the genus ''Microheriax'', which includes the smallest bird of prey species in the world. The pied falconet, also known as the white-legged falconet, nests in old woodpecker cavities. The species is listed as least concern because of its large home range and stable population size. Description The pied falconet is a small black and white raptor, measuring between 7-7 ½ inches and weighing between 55 and 75 g. However it is still larger than the other members of the genus ''Microhierax''. Its face is white with a prominent black patch covering the eyes reaching to the ear coverts with a yellowish beak. The Philippine falconet (''Microhierax erythrogenys'') is a species of bird of prey in the family Falconidae, genus ''Microhierax''. It is endemic to the lowland forests of Philippines, and can often be seen near open forest edges hunting flying insects. Philippine falconets nest in woodpecker holes of dead trees, and can be seen fairly commonly within their suitable habitats. Although the Philippine falconet population is declining due to habitat loss, it is still evaluated as "Least Concern" globally. Description The Philippine falconet has a length of 15 – 18 cm, a wingspan of 32 – 37 cm, and a body mass of 37 – 52 g. Compared to other members in the Falconidae family, it is extremely small. The fox kestrel (''Falco alopex'') is a bird of prey belonging to the falcon family Falconidae. It is found in arid, open country in the northern part of Sub-Saharan Africa. Description It is a large, slender kestrel with long, narrow wings and tail. It is long with a wingspan of and a weight of . The female is 3% larger than the male. The plumage is dark rufous above and below with black streaks. The tail is narrowly barred with black while the flight feathers of the wing are dark and unbarred. The underwings are pale, contrasting with the darker body. The carunculated caracara (''Phalcoboenus carunculatus'') is a species of bird of prey in the family Falconidae. It is found in páramo in the Andes of Ecuador and Colombia. It is generally uncommon to fairly common. Diet A highly opportunistic species often seen walking on the ground, it will feed on both carrion and virtually any small animal it can catch. Description It resembles the closely related mountain caracara, but unlike that species its chest and upper belly is black with dense white streaks.
