Twelve men have been the president or chancellor at East Carolina University. In 1972, ECU joined the UNC system, which changed the name of the chief administrator at East Carolina. The chancellor is chosen by the UNC board of governors on the recommendation of the UNC BOG president. Above the chancellor is the board of trustees. Four of the twelve trustees are picked by the governor of North Carolina. The student body president sits on the board ''ex officio''. John Decatur Messick
John Decatur Messick (November 9, 1897 – October 3, 1993) was the fifth president of what is now East Carolina University. He was born on November 9, 1897, near Aurora, North Carolina. He graduated from Elon College in 1922. He then went to summer school to complete graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1934, he earned a Ph.D. degree from New York University. In 1947, Messick became the fifth President of East Carolina Teachers College, a position he held until resigning in 1959. Cecil Staton
Cecil Pope Staton Jr. (born January 26, 1958) is an American politician and academic administrator. He served as the Chancellor of East Carolina University from 2016 to 2019. Previously, Staton served as Interim President of Valdosta State University (2015–2016) and as Vice Chancellor for Extended Education with the University System of Georgia (2014–2016). Staton served five terms as an elected official in the U.S. state of Georgia. He was a member of the Republican Party and served in the Georgia State Senate representing the 18th district, which includes portions of Bibb, Houston, Monroe, Jones, and Crawford counties. In the newly drawn maps approved by the United States Justice Department on December 23, 2011, the 18th District added Peach and Upson counties, but no longer included Jones County. Steven Ballard
Steve Ballard is a former chancellor at East Carolina University. On June 1, 2004, Chancellor Ballard began his new job, becoming the tenth chief administrator at ECU. Early life and College Ballard spent his childhood in Galesburg, Illinois then attended the University of Arizona, where he graduated with distinction in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in history. As shortstop and captain of the Arizona Wildcats baseball team, he earned three varsity letters and played in the College World Series during his senior year. William Shelton is a university administrator, having served as President of Eastern Michigan University for 11 years and interim Chancellor at East Carolina University. Born in Tennessee and earned a bachelor's and master's degrees in history from the University of Memphis. He was conferred a doctorate degree in higher education administration from the University of Mississippi. William Van Muse (born April 7, 1939) was the President of the University of Akron from 1984 to 1992, of Auburn University from 1992 to 2001, and Chancellor of East Carolina University from 2001 to 2003. John McDade Howell
John McDade Howell (January 28, 1922 – January 3, 2016) was the seventh chancellor of East Carolina University. He was born in Five Points, Alabama. In 1942, he joined the US Army Air Corps and served for three years in the European Theater, which he received a Bronze Star. After he was honorably discharged he enrolled at the University of Alabama, earning a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1948 and a master's degree in political science the following year. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa. In 1954 Howell earned his doctorate in political science from Duke University. He then joined the faculty as an associate professor of Political Science at Memphis State University. He then moved to Greenville, North Carolina and joined ECU faculty in 1957 and was promoted to full professor in 1961. Thomas Bowman Brewer (born July 22, 1932) was the second chancellor of East Carolina University, serving in that position from 1978 to 1982. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas and went to the University of Texas at Austin and received his B.A. and M.A. Brewer earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania concentrating on American history. Leo Warren Jenkins
Leo Warren Jenkins (May 28, 1913 – January 14, 1989) was the sixth president and chancellor of what is now East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, United States. He was born in the Succasunna section of Roxbury, New Jersey and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He attended Rutgers University, majoring in political science a masters from Columbia University and a doctorate from New York University. He enlisted in World War II as a marine, serving during the battle of Guam. Jenkins joined the faculty of East Carolina Teachers College in 1947 and served as Dean of the school until his election to the presidency in 1960.
