Science Fiction On Television
Science fiction first appeared in television programming in the late 1930s, during what is called the Golden Age of Science Fiction. Special effects and other production techniques allow creators to present a living visual image of an imaginary world not limited by the constraints of reality. Story creation and scientific accuracy Science fiction tries to blend fiction and reality seamlessly so that the viewer can be immersed in the imaginative world. This includes characters, settings, and tools. Viewers often critique the scientific plausibility and accuracy of technology and technological concepts. In the 2020 series ''Away (TV series), Away'' a notable plot point in the eight episode, ''Vital Signs'' has astronauts listen intently for a sound boom picked up by a real-life Mars rover called InSight. Martin Day (writer)
Martin Day (born 1968 in Yeovil) is a screenwriter and novelist best known for his work on various spin-offs related to the BBC Television series ''Doctor Who'', and many episodes of the soaps ''Fair City'', ''Doctors'' and ''Family Affairs''. Having worked previously at Bath Spa University, he is now visiting lecturer in creative writing at the University of Winchester and the Wessex regional representative of the Writers' Guild of Great Britain. Work Day's first published fiction was the novel '' The Menagerie'' in 1995, published by Virgin Publishing as part of their ''Doctor Who'' '' Missing Adventures'' series. Following the withdrawal of Virgin's licence to produce ''Doctor Who'' novels, Day moved to BBC Books, who published the novel ''The Devil Goblins from Neptune'' in 1997. Rebecca Levene
Rebecca Levene is a British author and editor. She is the author of ''The Hollow Gods'' fantasy novel series. In the 1990s, she was an editor at Virgin Books, including notably of the New Adventures series. Biography Levene had a sitcom optioned, but never produced by the BBC. Her first novel, '' Where Angels Fear'', was co-written with Simon Winstone, her deputy and successor on the New Adventures. More recently, she has written for publisher Black Flame, including a ''Strontium Dog'' novel ''Bad Timing'' and a ''Final Destination'' novel ''End of the Line''. In 2014, she published ''Smiler's Fair'', the first in a fantasy series ''The Hollow Gods'' published by Hodder & Stoughton. Barry Letts
Barry Leopold Letts (26 March 1925 – 9 October 2009) was an English actor, television director, writer and producer, best known for being the producer of '' Doctor Who'' from 1969 to 1974. Born in Leicester, he worked as an actor in theatre, films and television before retiring in his early forties and becoming a television director. He then became the producer of the BBC science fiction series ''Doctor Who'' for five years, overseeing almost the entirety of Jon Pertwee's tenure as the Third Doctor and casting Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor. He produced or directed many of the BBC's Sunday Classic drama serials from 1976 to 1986, and returned to ''Doctor Who'' in 1980 to be the executive producer for its eighteenth season. Paul Leonard (writer)
Paul J. Leonard Hinder, better known by his pseudonym of Paul Leonard and also originally published as PJL Hinder, is an author best known for his work on various spin-off fiction based on the long-running British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who''. Leonard has acknowledged a debt to his friend and fellow ''Doctor Who'' author Jim Mortimore in his writing career, having turned to Mortimore for help and advice at the start of it. This advice led to his first novel, ''Venusian Lullaby'' being published as part of Virgin Publishing's '' Missing Adventures'' range in 1994. Robert Holmes (scriptwriter)
Robert Colin Holmes (2 April 1926 – 24 May 1986) was a British television scriptwriter. For over 25 years he contributed to some of the most popular programmes screened in the UK. He is particularly remembered for his work on science fiction on television, science fiction programmes, most notably his extensive contributions to ''Doctor Who'', which included working as its script editor from 1974 to 1977. Holmes suffered ill health from the early 1980s. He died in May 1986 while working on scripts for the second and final Sixth Doctor season ''The Trial of a Time Lord''. Early career In 1944, at the age of 18, Holmes joined the army, fighting with the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders regiment in Burma. Craig Hinton
Craig Paul Alexander Hinton (7 May 1964 – 3 December 2006) was a British writer best known for his work on various spin-offs from the BBC Television series ''Doctor Who''. He also wrote articles for various science fiction magazines, and was the Coordinator of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society. He most recently lived in London, where he taught mathematics. Hinton was found dead in his home on 3 December 2006. The cause of death was given as heart attack. Simon Guerrier
Simon Guerrier (born June 1976) is a British science fiction author and dramatist, closely associated with the fictional universe of ''Doctor Who'' and its spinoffs. Although he has written three ''Doctor Who'' novels, for the BBC Books range, his work has mostly been for Big Finish Productions' audio drama and book ranges. Guerrier has also written tie-in books for the Being Human and Primeval television series and co-authored a reference book for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series.
