Captain (Gaelic Games)
A captain of a Gaelic games team, sometimes known as a ''skipper'', is a player who, during the course of a match as well as before and after it, has several additional roles and responsibilities over and above those of his teammates. Tradition means that some teams rotate the captaincy annually, though others may adopt a permanent captain. As well as being an onfield leader, a captain takes the coin toss and raises the trophy when this is the game's prize. Responsibilities The captain leads the team out onto the pitch. Before the start of a match, a coin toss between captains of the opposing teams is used to determine which end of the ground each team will kick to. Ahead of the All-Ireland final, the captain is the first member of the team to shake the hand of dignitaries who may be attending the game, for example the president of the GAA or the president of Ireland. Ben O'Connor (hurler)
Ben O'Connor (born 25 January 1979) is an Irish hurling coach and former player. He is the current coach of the Charleville intermediate team. O'Connor played for Cork Senior Championship club Newtownshandrum and was a member of the Cork senior hurling team for 14 seasons, during which time he usually lined out as a right wing-forward. Noted for his commanding presence and scoring ability on the wing, he is regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation. O'Connor began his hurling career at club level with Newtownshandrum. He broke onto the club's top adult team as a 17-year-old in 1996 and enjoyed his first success that year when the club won the Cork Intermediate Championship title and promotion to the top flight of Cork hurling. O'Connor went on to make 79 championship appearances at senior level and was at centre-forward on Newtownshandrum's All-Ireland Club Championship-winning team in 2004. The 2005 All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship was the 42nd staging of the All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county hurling tournament for players under the age of twenty-one. The championship began on 31 May 2005 and ended on 18 September 2005. Kilkenny were the defending champions. On 18 September 2005, Galway won the championship following a 1-15 to 1-14 defeat of Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final. This was their 8th All-Ireland title and their first since 1996. Sarsfields GAA (Cork)
Sarsfields GAA is a hurling club is based in the Riverstown and Glanmire area of County Cork. The club plays in the Imokilly division of Cork GAA. They have won six County Championships, 1951, 1957, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014. They have also won three Minor County Championships, 2007, 2008 and 2014. The club derives its name for the Irish Jacobite and soldier Patrick Sarsfield, 1st Earl of Lucan. County Championship history While the club reached a number of championship semi-finals prior to 1936, it wasn't until the 1936 Cork Senior Hurling Championship before the club contested their first final. Kieran Murphy (Sarsfields Hurler)
Kieran Murphy (born 22 February 1983 in Glanmire, County Cork) is an Irish former sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Sarsfields GAA (Cork), Sarsfields and was a member of the Cork GAA, Cork senior inter-county team from 2003 until 2011. Murphy was appointed captain of the team for 2010. Murphy announced his retirement from inter-county hurling in 2011 due to work commitments outside the Cork area. Playing career Sarsfields Murphy plays his club hurling with his local club called Sarsfields GAA (Cork), Sarsfield's and has enjoyed much success. He first came to prominence as the club enjoyed an under-age boom in the early years of the new century. The 2004 All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship was the 41st staging of the All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county hurling tournament for players under the age of twenty-one. The championship began on 2 June 2004 and ended on 18 September 2004. Kilkenny were the defending champions. The All-Ireland final was played on 18 September 2004 at Nowlan Park in Kilkenny, between Kilkenny and Tipperary, in what was their first meeting in a final in 9 years. Erin's Own GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Glounthaune in east County Cork, Ireland. The club is made up of players from Little Island, Knockraha, Brooklodge and Glounthaune areas of the parish. The club caters for players at all age levels in hurling, Gaelic football, camogie and ladies football. The club plays in the Imokilly division of Cork GAA. Kieran Murphy (Erin's Own Hurler)
Kieran Murphy (born 1983) is an Irish hurler. His league and championship career with the Cork senior team spanned seven seasons from 2002 to 2008. Born in Glounthaune, County Cork, Murphy first played competitive hurling and Gaelic football at Coláiste an Phiarsaigh. He simultaneously came to prominence at juvenile and underage levels with the Erin's Own club, before eventually becoming a dual player with the club's adult teams. Murphy won back-to-back county championship medals in 2006 and 2007. Murphy made his debut on the inter-county scene when he was selected for the Cork minor teams as a dual player in 2000. He enjoyed two championship seasons with the minor teams, winning All-Ireland medals in both codes.
