This is a list of number-one albums in the United States by year from the main '' Billboard'' albums chart, currently called the ''Billboard'' 200. ''Billboard'' first began publishing an album chart on March 24, 1945. The chart expanded to 200 positions on the week ending May 13, 1967, and adopted its current name on March 14, 1992. Since May 25, 1991, the ''Billboard'' 200 positions have been derived from Nielsen SoundScan sales data, currently contributed by approximately 14,000 music retailers. In December 2014, ''Billboard'' updated the methodology of the ''Billboard'' 200 albums chart to also include on-demand streaming and digital track sales. ''Billboard'' (stylized as ''billboard'') is an American music and entertainment magazine published weekly by Penske Media Corporation. The magazine provides music charts, news, video, opinion, reviews, events, and style related to the music industry. Its music charts include the Hot 100, the 200, and the Global 200, tracking the most popular albums and songs in different genres of music. It also hosts events, owns a publishing firm, and operates several TV shows. ''Billboard'' was founded in 1894 by William Donaldson and James Hennegan as a trade publication for bill posters. Donaldson later acquired Hennegan's interest in 1900 for $500. In the early years of the 20th century, it covered the entertainment industry, such as circuses, fairs, and burlesque shows, and also created a mail service for travelling entertainers. The American ''Billboard'' magazine, publishes a weekly chart that ranks the highest-selling albums in the country. In 1962, the album chart was known as "Top LP's" and was divided between the mono format, with 150 chart positions and stereo with 50. In 1962, six mono and stereo albums topped the chart. The first record to top the mono chart was the soundtrack to the 1961 film '' Blue Hawaii'' recorded by Elvis Presley. The soundtrack album reached the top in early December 1961 and stayed atop till late April for 20 consecutive weeks. In July 2002, it was certified three times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The soundtrack of the American film ''West Side Story'' (1961) replaced ''Blue Hawaii'' for seven weeks in May and June and for three additional weeks in September and October.
