Goombay
Goombay is a form of Bahamian music and a drum used to create it. The drum is a membranophone made with goat skin and played with the hands. The term Goombay has also symbolized an event in the Bahamas, for a summer festival with short parades known as ‘Junkanoo’. The goombay name has also evolved to become synonymous with local Afro-Caribbean music related to Calypso music, calypso. In The Bahamas, its most famous practitioner in modern times was Blake Alphonso Higgs, Alphonso 'Blind Blake' Higgs, who performed at the Nassau International Airport for many years. The Goombay Dance Band help to popularise the musical style in the West in the early 1980s. Their single, "Seven Tears (song), Seven Tears", reached number one in the UK Singles Chart in March 1982. T-Connection was a funk and disco group from Nassau, the Bahamas, who scored two hits on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 between 1977 and 1979. They did better on the US Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, where they had five Top 10 hits, including "Do What You Wanna Do", which reached #1, and "Everything Is Cool", which peaked at #10 on the US ''Billboard'' R&B chart. In the United Kingdom, they scored five entries in the UK Singles Chart, with "Do What You Wanna Do" their highest placed success at #11. Their track "Groove to Get Down" has been heavily sampled due to its inclusion on the 1986 ''Ultimate Breaks and Beats'' series. Nassau ( ) is the capital and largest city of the Bahamas. Angelique Sabrina (born February 7, 1998) is a Bahamian singer, songwriter, dancer, actress and performer. Early life Angelique was born on February 7, 1998, in Nassau, Bahamas and was brought up in a family with an extensive musical background. Her music producer father, Gregg White, was the first to sign alternative hip-hop group Arrested Development. Angelique grew up as a student of music. She began studying piano, guitar, and drums as a child and spent extensive personal time studying Broadway and Disney songs, and artists like Frank Sinatra and Diana Ross. Johnny Kemp
Jonathan "Johnny" Kemp (August 2, 1959 – April 16, 2015) was a Bahamian singer, songwriter, and record producer. He began his career as a songwriter in late 1979 and is perhaps best known for his solo work, including his single " Just Got Paid" (1988), which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song in 1989. Biography Early life and career Kemp began singing in nightclubs in the Bahamas at age 13. He moved to Harlem, New York in 1979 with the band Kinky Fox. In the early 1980s, Kemp became a successful session musician and songwriter, singing backup for the B. B. & Q. Calypso Music
Calypso is a style of Caribbean music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago during the early to the mid-19th century and spread to the rest of the Caribbean Antilles and Venezuela by the mid-20th century. Its rhythms can be traced back to West African Kaiso and the arrival of French planters and their slaves from the French Antilles in the 18th century. It is characterized by highly rhythmic and harmonic vocals, and was historically most often sung in a French creole and led by a griot. As calypso developed, the role of the griot became known as a ''chantuelle'' and eventually, ''calypsonian''. As English replaced "patois" (Antillean creole) as the dominant language, calypso migrated into English, and in so doing it attracted more attention from the government. Blake Alphonso Higgs
Blake Alphonso Higgs (1915 – 1986), better known as "Blind Blake", was the best-known performer of goombay and calypso in the Bahamas from the 1930s to the 1960s. Biography Higgs was born in 1915 in Matthew Town, Inagua, Bahamas. For much of his career, Blind Blake was based at the Royal Victoria Hotel in Nassau. Included in his wide repertoire was "Love, Love Alone", a song (by Trinidadian calypsonian Caresser) about the abdication of Edward VIII. Blind Blake's version of this calypso is said to have been enjoyed by the former king himself, who, as the Duke of Windsor, served as Governor of the Bahamas during World War II. Higgs played the banjo and sang, releasing four albums during his tenure at the Royal Victoria Hotel, one with singer Lou Adams, and several other lesser albums towards the end of his career. Avvy
Avvy (born April 22, 1984) is a songwriter and performer contributing to the art of Bahamian folk music, Junkanoo and Rake-and-scrape. In 2014 his singles "Dirty Nagua Rake" and "Swing Swing" took top position in the local Bahamian charts. Career Avvy Sra active in songwriting and performing in 2005. Early in his career he received accolades for reviving native Bahamian music with innovative storytelling, upbeat rhythms and energetic performances. His father and uncles were also musicians and are cited by Avvy as role models, together with well known musicians including Otis Redding and Michael Jackson. In 2014 local airline Pineapple Air announced a partnership with Avvy to advertise their service between Nassau and Eleuthera.
