This list contains an overview of the locomotives of the Grand Duchy of Baden State Railway (''Großherzogliche Baden Staatsbahn''), the national railway of the Grand Duchy of Baden, a sovereign state within the German Empire until 1920. Classification scheme Locomotives in the Grand Duchy of Baden State Railway were organised into classes and were given a railway number as well as names. Their names were derived from the animal kingdom, geographical features (rivers, mountains and towns) as well as people. Because the selection of names became increasingly difficult as more and more vehicles were procured, in 1868 the allocation of names was dropped from locomotive number 218 onwards. In 1882, all name plates were removed. Railway numbers were issued in sequence. When locomotives were retired, their numbers were allocated to the next locomotives to be delivered. Mallet Locomotive
The Mallet locomotive is a type of articulated steam railway locomotive, invented by the Swiss engineer Anatole Mallet (1837–1919). The front of the locomotive articulated on a bogie. The compound steam system fed steam at boiler pressure to high-pressure cylinders driving the rear set of driving wheels (rigidly connected to the boiler). The exhaust steam from these cylinders was fed into a low-pressure receiver and was then sent to low-pressure cylinders that powered the driving wheels on the swiveling bogie towards the front of locomotive. Compounding Steam under pressure is converted into mechanical energy more efficiently if it is used in a compound engine; in such an engine steam from a boiler is used in high-pressure (HP) cylinders and then under reduced pressure in a second set of cylinders. The Prussian Class P 8 of the Prussian state railways (DRG Class 38.10-40 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn) was a 4-6-0 steam locomotive built from 1906 to 1923 by the Berliner Maschinenbau (previously Schwartzkopff) and twelve other German factories. The design was created by Robert Garbe. It was intended as a successor to the Prussian P 6, which was regarded as unsatisfactory. Construction Because Garbe was an advocate of the simplest possible designs, a straightforward, superheated steam, two-cylinder driving gear was envisaged. The P 8 benefited especially from superheated steam technology, which had just been developed by Wilhelm Schmidt (nicknamed 'Hot Steam Schmidt'), that led to outstanding performance for those times. The class IV h (four-h) locomotives of the Grand Duchy of Baden State Railway (German: ''Großherzoglich Badische Staatseisenbahnen, G.Bad.St.E.'') were express locomotives with a 4-6-2 (Pacific) wheel arrangement. They later passed to the Deutsche Reichsbahn, who classified them as class 183. The class IV f locomotives of the Grand Duchy of Baden State Railway (german: Großherzoglich Badische Staatseisenbahnen, G.Bad.St.E.) were express locomotives with a 4-6-2 (Pacific) wheel arrangement. They later passed to the Deutsche Reichsbahn, who classified them as class 18.2. These were the first Pacific locomotives in Germany and the second in Europe after the Paris-Orléans Railway 4500-series that had appeared a few months earlier. History The locomotives were produced in four batches between 1907 and 1913. The first batch of three locomotives was built in 1907 by Maffei. The locomotives of Baden Class IV e were designed and built for the Grand Duchy of Baden State Railway in the late 19th century by the Elsässischen Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft Grafenstaden, who supplied the first eight examples in 1894. The steam locomotives of Baden Class IV c were passenger locomotives operated by Grand Duchy of Baden State Railway in the former south German state of Baden. History As part of the purchase of locomotives in the early 1870s, a total of eight batches of Class IV c engines were ordered. These locomotives were used above all on lines with steep inclines in the Black Forest and the Odenwald. As a result, several engines were equipped with a Riggenbach counter-pressure brake. Baden III B
The Baden Class III b engines were German steam locomotives designed for hauling passenger trains for the Grand Duchy of Baden State Railway (''Großherzoglich Badische Staatseisenbahn''). In this class the Baden state railway grouped rebuilt locomotives of former classes III and III a. Seventy engines of Baden classes III and III a were rebuilt between 1881 and 1891. They were all given a new, more powerful, three-ring boiler with a larger grate area. Because this was longer than the original boilers, the frame of the Class III had to be extended (on the Class IIIa it was long enough) and a buffer beam built onto the front.
