Max Cullen (born 29 April 1940) is an Australian stage and screen actor. He has appeared in many Australian films and television series but is best known for his role in the film '' Spider and Rose'' and the television series '' The Flying Doctors'', '' Secret Valley'' and ''Love My Way''. Early life Cullen was born in Wellington, New South Wales in 1940, but when he was one year old his family moved to Lawson in the Blue Mountains. His brother was the actor Cul Cullen (1934–1982). Career He began his career as a painter and sculptor after training at Sydney's National Art School in 1956 and later studied at the Julian Ashton Art School with Brett Whiteley in 1959. Richard Wherrett
Richard Bruce Wherrett AM (10 December 19407 December 2001) was an Australian stage director, whose career spanned 40 years. he is known for being the founding director of the Sydney Theatre Company in 1979. Early life, education and family Richard Wherrett was born on 10 December 1940, the younger brother of motoring journalist Peter Wherrett. Their father was an abusive and violent alcoholic. He was educated at Trinity Grammar School in Sydney, before attending the University of Sydney, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1961. His contemporaries at the university included Clive James, Germaine Greer, Bruce Beresford, Mungo McCallum, Bob Ellis, John Bell, John Gaden, Laurie Oakes and Les Murray. He taught English and Ancient History at Trinity Grammar for four years. Wherrett knew he was gay from the age of 17. Nevertheless, he had a well-publicised relationship with the actress Jacki Weaver in the 1970s.

Production Screenwriter Denis Whitburn had written a play called ''The Siege of Frank Sinatra'' in which Max Cullen had starred in its original 1980 production. During the production Cullen and Whitburn would head out to bars and Cullen would sing in a Billie Holiday voice.
