List Of Attorneys General Of Wisconsin
The Attorney General of Wisconsin is a constitutional officer in the executive branch of the government of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Forty-five individuals have held the office of Attorney General since statehood. The incumbent is Josh Kaul, a Democrat. Election and term of office The Attorney General is elected on Election Day in November, and takes office on the first Monday of the next January. There is no limit to the number of terms an Attorney General may hold. From 1848 to 1968, the Attorney General was elected to a two-year term in the November general election. Since 1970, following ratification of a constitutional amendment in April 1967, the Attorney General has been elected to a four-year term. In the event of a vacancy in the office of the Attorney General, the Governor of Wisconsin may appoint a replacement to fill the remainder of the term. Josh Kaul
Joshua Lautenschlager Kaul (born February 2, 1981) is an American lawyer, politician and member of the Democratic Party who has served as the 45th Attorney General of Wisconsin since January 2019. Early life and education Kaul is the son of Peg Lautenschlager, an attorney and politician, and the Indian immigrant Raj Kaul. His stepfather, Bill Rippl, worked as a police officer. He was raised in Oshkosh and Fond du Lac. Kaul graduated from Yale University as a double major in history and economics. He earned his Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School. While a student at Stanford, he served as President of the ''Stanford Law Review''. Career Kaul clerked for Michael Boudin in the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Gabriel Bouck
Gabriel Bouck (December 16, 1828 – February 21, 1904) was an American lawyer, Democratic politician, and Wisconsin pioneer. He represented Wisconsin in the United States House of Representatives for two terms. He also served as Wisconsin's 6th Attorney General and was the 24th speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly. William Rudolph Smith
William Rudolph Smith (August 31, 1787August 22, 1868) was an American lawyer, politician, pioneer, and historian from Pennsylvania who served as the 5th Attorney General of Wisconsin and the first President of the Wisconsin Historical Society. Earlier, while living in Pennsylvania, he served as a Federalist member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and Senate, and served for many years in the Pennsylvania Militia, including service as Colonel of the 62nd Pennsylvania Reserves in the War of 1812. Experience Estabrook (April 30, 1813 March 26, 1894) was an American attorney and legal administrator. He was the 3rd Attorney General of Wisconsin and the 1st United States Attorney for the Nebraska Territory. Biography Born in Lebanon, New Hampshire, he moved with his parents to Clarence, New York, in 1822 where he attended the public schools. Estabrook then attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania Law School, and then was admitted to the bar in Brooklyn, New York in 1839. He worked as a clerk at the Navy Yard in Brooklyn and later practiced law in Buffalo, New York. In 1840, he moved to Geneva, Wisconsin in 1840 and continued the practice of law. William Pitt Lynde (December 16, 1817December 18, 1885) was an American lawyer, U.S. congressman, and Wisconsin pioneer. He represented Milwaukee and southeast Wisconsin in the 30th, 44th, and 45th congresses, and served as the 12th mayor of Milwaukee. Prior to Wisconsin statehood, he also served as United States attorney and attorney general of the Wisconsin Territory. James Duane Doty (November 5, 1799 – June 13, 1865) was a land speculator and politician in the United States who played an important role in the development of Wisconsin and Utah Territory. Early life and legal career A descendant of ''Mayflower'' immigrant Edward Doty, Doty was born in Salem, New York, in 1799. He was less than three years old when his family moved to Martinsburg, New York, which was founded by his mother's brother General Walter Martin. Doty attended the Lowville Academy several miles north of Martinsburg in Lowville, New York. Moses Henry Dodge (October 12, 1782 – June 19, 1867) was a Democratic member to the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate, Territorial Governor of Wisconsin and a veteran of the Black Hawk War.
