Bluebird Theater
The Bluebird Theater (originally known as the Thompson Theater) is a theater in Denver, Colorado on East Colfax Avenue. The theater was designed by Harry W.J. Edbrooke and built during 1913–1914. It was renamed in 1922. It is currently used as a live music venue. It was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1997. History The Bluebird Theater was built in 1913 and originally named after the prominent Denver grocer and druggist, John Thompson. The theater was renamed in 1922 and became an important part of the community. The theater was also initially a movie house and went through various phases over the years. In 1994, Chris Swank and Evan Dechtman invested in the Bluebird and it re-opened as a live music venue, as it remains today. Shangri-La (house)
Shangri-La is a Streamline Moderne mansion in Denver, Colorado, United States. Commissioned by Denver movie theater magnate Harry E. Huffman and designed by architect Raymond Harry Ervin, it is a replica of the fictional monastery featured in the 1937 film ''Lost Horizon''. Built on a tract of land in 1937–38, it was occupied by Huffman and his wife until 1969. Beginning in 1962, the west lawn was subdivided and populated with additional upscale housing, including Cableland, and the circular drive was remapped as Shangri La Drive. The current owners of the house are A. Barry and Arlene Hirschfeld. History The tract of land on which the house and its grounds originally stood was purchased by Denver movie theater owner Harry E. Huffman in the mid-1930s. Fisher & Fisher was an architectural firm based in Denver, Colorado named for partners William Ellsworth Fisher (1871–1937) and Arthur Addison Fisher (1878–1965). The firm was founded in 1892 by William Ellsworth Fisher as William Fisher, Architect. After ten years in practice alone, mainly designing starter homes, he partnered with Daniel Riggs Huntington from 1901 to 1905 as Fisher & Huntington, during which time the firm designed increasingly expensive residences and also commercial buildings. The firm then once more became William Fisher, Architect until 1907, when William was joined by his younger brother Arthur Addison Fisher; they worked together as William Fisher Architect and Brother until 1910 and then as William E. The Oxford Hotel is a historic building in Denver, Colorado, which was designed by early Denver architect Frank Edbrooke, and built in 1891. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The Cruise Room is a hotel bar with historic art deco interior, that was operated as an illicit speakeasy. History The Oxford Hotel was built in 1891. In February 1908, Bill Haywood and two other officers of the Western Federation of Miners were secretly held overnight in adjacent rooms in the Oxford, by the Denver police. Nordlund House
Nordlund House is a historic house in central Denver, Colorado. Designed by Eugene G. Groves, it is a seven-level building and 3,000 square foot dwelling. The exterior is precast and poured-in-place, reinforced concrete, a process that was patented by Groves and made by his construction company. The exterior walls have rounded corners and are finished in stucco. There is a rooftop terrace and a domed living room roof. Decorative elements include wrought iron and red glazed tiles. Concrete is used within the interior of the house, including the built-in seating in the kitchen, kitchen countertops and cabinet faces, and bookcases. The Mountain States Telephone Building (also known as Telephone Building) is a historic building located at 931 14th Street in Denver, Colorado. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 26, 2005. It served as the headquarters of the Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph Company, later known as Mountain Bell. Constructed in a variant of the Gothic Revival style named "Modern American Perpendicular Gothic," the building was designed by local architect William N. Bowman. Midwest Steel & Iron Works was a metal fabrication company based in Denver, Colorado. Founded in 1893, the company was known for a time as the Jackson-Richter Iron Works. The company was one of the "oldest and largest metal fabricators" in Denver. The company built both structural and ornamental components for structures throughout Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico. The company's headquarters on Larimer Street in Denver includes an Art Deco office building and consists of a four-building complex that is itself considered a historic industrial site. The complex served as the company's headquarters from 1923 to 1983. Mayan Theater (Denver)
The Mayan Theater (110 Broadway, Denver, Colorado) is a movie house that opened in 1930 and was part of the Fox Theater Corporation and Fox Intermountain Theaters. Its life as a Fox Theatre is denoted on top of its neon marquee. As with many theaters across the U.S., it ran an A and B slate of films throughout the day. During the Great Depression, the theater held grocery nights where customers had the opportunity to win groceries. The theater closed around 1984. In 1986, the theatre was converted into a three-plex by closing off the balcony and dividing it into two additional small theatres. This conversion included a restoration of the interior walls, decor and lobby. Landmark Theaters has operated the location as an "art house" since 1986. Capitol Hill, Denver
Located in the city and county of Denver, Colorado, the Capitol Hill neighborhood is bordered by Broadway, Downing Street, Colfax Avenue, and Seventh Avenue, which carry large volumes of traffic around the neighborhood.
