Viviana Alder
Viviana A. Alder (born 1957 in Puerto San Julián, San Julián, Argentina) is an Argentinian researcher in Antarctica, best known for her research on marine microbiology. Alder is considered to be among the first group of Argentine female scientists to work in Antarctica. Early life and education Alder obtained a degree in Oceanography from the National University of Patagonia San Juan Bosco, Universidad Nacional de la Patagonia in 1982, and received her doctorate in Biological Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires in 1995. Career and impact Alder's research investigates the impact of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and also El Nino and La Nina on food web structure, species dispersal and population abundance through the investigation of planktonic marine microbial communities. Delphine Lannuzel
Delphine Lannuzel is a sea ice biogeochemist and Senior Lecturer at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), University of Tasmania. Early life and education Lannuzel completed her undergraduate degree at the Institut Universitaire Européen de la Mer, Brest, France in 2001. In 2006, Lannuzel was awarded her PhD in Biogeochemistry of iron in the Antarctic sea ice environment from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium. Career and impact Lannuzel was previously an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Early Career Researcher at IMAS. Lannuzel's research is in the study of trace metals in the sea ice environment The iron and other trace element data generated from her research represented the first for the Antarctic pack ice zone. Edith Fanta
Edith Susana Elisabeth Fanta was a Brazilian Antarctic marine biology researcher, best known for her work on preserving and protecting Antarctica. She was a professor at the Federal University of Paraná. Early life and education Fanta was born in São Paulo, Brazil in 1943. She received her Masters (1970) and PhD (1972) degrees from the University of São Paulo in the field of Zoology. Fanta undertook post-doctoral research at the Institute of Radiation and Environment in Munich, Germany (1974–76), and at the University of Bristol, UK. Career and impact She then returned to Brazil to the Fisheries Institute at São Paulo State University, before taking on a professorship at the Federal University of Paraná State (UFPR) in the Center of Marine Studies in 1980. Annick Wilmotte
Annick Wilmotte is a Belgian Antarctic researcher, best known for her research on the diversity and ecology of Antarctic cyanobacterial microflora. A genus of Antarctic cyanobacteria, called ''Wilmottia'' was named after her in recognition of her work in this field. Early life and education Wilmotte completed her MSc (Botanical Sciences) at the University of Liège in 1982. Her thesis investigated the use of epiphytic marine cyanobacteria as indicators of pollution of Calvi Bay, Corsica, France. She subsequently completed her PhD in Botanical Sciences from the University of Liège. Nerida Wilson
Nerida Gaye Wilson is an invertebrate marine molecular biologist at the Western Australian Museum who has interests in diversity, systematics, phylogeny, phylogeography and behavior. Wilson has been instrumental in demonstrating the level of marine cryptic species complexes in Antarctic waters, testing the circumpolar distribution paradigm with molecular data, and using interdisciplinary approaches to show how Antarctic diversity may have been generated. Her work with NOAA on Antarctic Marine Living Resources has been used to regulate exploratory benthic fisheries. Barbara Wienecke
Barbara Wienecke is a senior research scientist with the Australian Antarctic Division. She is a seabird ecologist who uses satellite tracking to investigate seabird population dynamics and ecology. Wienecke has played a key role in enhancing the quality of, and overseeing the implementation of, a number of Antarctic Specially Protected Area management plans for wildlife concentrations in East Antarctica. Early life and education Wienecke was born in Namibia but graduated from high school in Germany. After travelling and living in a number of different countries, including Israel and the Netherlands, she moved to Australia to begin her bachelor's degree. Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann
Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann AM (born 1950) is an Australian Aboriginal activist, educator and artist of the Ngan’gityemerri language group. Ungunmerr-Baumann is the first Indigenous teacher to work in the Northern Territory. and the owner of Rak Malfiyin Homeland. She is also the first Indigenous Australian woman to visit Antarctica. Ungunmerr-Baumann is a "devout Christian" and much of her artwork reflects religious themes. In 2021, she was named Senior Australian of the Year. Biography Ungunmerr-Baumann was born in 1950 in Daly River. She was baptized as a Catholic when she was fifteen. Elizabeth Truswell
Elizabeth Marchant Truswell (also known as Elizabeth Kemp) is a former Chief Scientist at the Australian Geological Survey Organisation and is known for her application of recycled palynomorph distribution as an indicator of sub-ice geology. Early life and education Truswell was born in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia and completed a BSc (Hons) at the University of Western Australia in 1962. In 1963 she received a British Commonwealth Scholarship to undertake a PhD at Cambridge University, UK. She was awarded her PhD in 1966 on the geological history of flowering plants as demonstrated by the pollen record. Jan Strugnell
Jan Maree Strugnell is an Australian evolutionary molecular biologist. She is a professor and director in the Centre for Sustainable Tropical Fisheries and Aquaculture at James Cook University, Townsville, Australia. Strugnell's work has investigated population and species level molecular evolution in Antarctic and deep sea species in the context of past geological and climatic change. Justine Shaw
Justine Shaw is an Australian Antarctic researcher, best known for her conservation work on subantarctic islands, currently working at the Queensland University of Technology. She has a wide global research network, having worked in Australia, South Africa, sub-Antarctic/Antarctic and the Arctic. Patricia Margaret Selkirk
Patricia Margaret Selkirk, (née Connell; born 1942) is an Australian plant biologist and ecologist. Her career has focused on Antarctic and subantarctic terrestrial ecosystems and she is recognized as being a pioneering female Australian Antarctic scientist. Life and career Patricia Margaret Connell was born in Newcastle, and educated at Narrabeen Girls' High School and The Women's College, The University of Sydney (BSc Hons, PhD). Anya Marie Reading is a professor of Geophysics and Associate Head of Research in the School of Natural Sciences, University of Tasmania. Early life and education Reading completed her undergraduate education at the University of Edinburgh, UK, receiving a BSc (Hons) in geophysics in 1991.
