Wade Boteler
Wade Boteler (October 3, 1888 – May 7, 1943) was an American film actor and writer. He appeared in more than 430 films between 1919 and 1943. Biography He was born in Santa Ana, California, and died in Hollywood, California, from a heart attack. Boteler graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. After he graduated, he stayed there as a director until he joined the Army in World War I. For three years in the mid-1920s, he worked for Douglas MacLean's film company as both actor and writer. On Broadway, Boteler appeared in the play '' The Silent Voice'' (1914). William Russell (American Actor)
William Russell (born William Lerche; April 12, 1884 – February 18, 1929) was an American actor, film director, film producer and screenwriter. He appeared in over two hundred silent-era motion pictures between 1910 and 1929, directing five of them in 1916 and producing two through his own production company in 1918 and 1925. Early life and career Born in the Bronx borough of New York City, Russell began his acting career on the stage when he was eight years old. He appeared with such notables as Ethel Barrymore, Chauncey Olcott, Blanche Bates, Maude Adams and others. Russell's Broadway credits include ''Princess Flavia'' (1925), ''Cyrano de Bergerac'' (1923), and ''The Tenderfoot'' (1904). His career came to a stop when he was 16, however, when he became an invalid. Through rigorous physical therapy, he recovered his health six years later. He then became an amateur boxing champion. Joseph J. Franz (October 12, 1883 – September 9, 1970) was an actor and film director during the silent film era in the United States. Franz was born in Utica, New York. He died in Los Angeles in 1970. He was sometimes credited as Joseph J. First National Pictures
First National Pictures was an American motion picture production and distribution company. It was founded in 1917 as First National Exhibitors' Circuit, Inc., an association of independent theatre owners in the United States, and became the country's largest theater chain. Expanding from exhibiting movies to distributing them, the company reincorporated in 1919 as Associated First National Theatres, Inc., and Associated First National Pictures, Inc. In 1924 it expanded to become a motion picture production company as First National Pictures, Inc., and became an important studio in the film industry. In September 1928, control of First National passed to Warner Bros., into which it was completely absorbed on November 4, 1929. A number of Warner Bros. films were thereafter branded First National Pictures until July 1936, when First National Pictures, Inc., was dissolved. Mary Loretta Philbin (July 16, 1902 – May 7, 1993) was an American film actress of the silent film era, who is best known for playing the roles of Christine Daaé in the 1925 film ''The Phantom of the Opera '' opposite Lon Chaney, and as Dea in ''The Man Who Laughs'' alongside Conrad Veidt. Both roles cast her as the beauty in ''Beauty and the Beast''-type stories. Early life Philbin was born on July 16, 1902 in Chicago, Illinois, into a middle-class Irish American family and raised Catholic. She was an only child, and was named after her mother, Mary. Josef Swickard (26 June 1866 – 1 March 1940) was a kingdom of Prussia, Prussian-born veteran stage and screen character actor, who had toured with stock companies in Europe, South Africa, and South America. Career Swickard emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1882. He was a stage actor several years before entering films with D.W. Griffith in 1912 and by 1914 was playing supporting roles for Mack Sennett. He appeared in Charles Chaplin's ''Laughing Gas (1914 film), Laughing Gas'' and ''Caught in a Cabaret''. He remained with Sennett until 1917, when he settled into his prolific career of playing mostly aristocratic characters. It was distributed through Associated First National Pictures. Plot As described in a film magazine review, Janet Loring deserts her young son Ranny when she marries the millionaire Malcolm Trask. Ranny becomes the tool of a criminal, but saves all of the money he gets so he can buy a home for the young woman that he loves. His mother misses him, and attempts to locate him by advertising for him. As a scheme, the crook sends Ranny in response to the advertisement, not knowing that he is really her son. Ranny takes money from his mother, but then becomes conscience stricken, and admits to her that he is an imposter. However, she convinces him that he belongs to her.
