In early-1970s, the CBS television network aired American Basketball Association (ABA) games, specifically league's annual All-Star Game/selected playoff games. Pat Summerall served as the CBS analyst on some ABA games alongside Don Criqui on play-by-play. Game 5 of the 1970 ABA Finals (Indiana vs. Los Angeles) was nationally televised by CBS on Saturday, May 23 at 3 p.m Eastern Time. The broadcast was however, blacked out in Indiana. After that league's 1972-73 season, CBS lost its TV airing rights as they started airing National Basketball Association (NBA) games in its 1973-74 season onward. Had there been a seventh game of the 1975-76 season's championship playoff series it would've been televised by NBC, because that network signed contract to a potential seventh game on Sunday, May 16, 1976. The American Basketball Association (ABA) was a major men's professional basketball league from 1967 to 1976. 1967–68 ABA Season
The 1967–68 ABA season was the first season for the American Basketball Association. The ABA was challenging the National Basketball Association. The ABA introduced a red, white and blue basketball. They used a 30-second shot clock as opposed to the NBA's 24 second shot clock, and also used the three-point shot. There were 11 teams playing in the first season of the league, with each team playing a 78-game schedule. WLOL (1330 AM) is a radio station in the Twin Cities region of Minnesota. It broadcasts a Catholic Radio format and is part of the Relevant Radio network. WLOL's transmitter is located along the Minnesota River in Savage. History WLOL, named for the "Land Of Lakes", is one of the area's most legendary set of call letters. WLOL's history is intertwined with many other local frequencies over the years. The first incarnation of WLOL signed on at 1300 AM on June 16, 1940 and was a part of the Mutual Broadcasting System, a national radio network in the United States. 1967–68 Minnesota Muskies Season
The 1967–68 Minnesota Muskies season was the first and only season of the Muskies in the newly created American Basketball Association. The team was created on February 2, 1967 for the price of $30,000 to L.P. Shields and Fred Jefferson. The team was named after a nickname for the Muskellunge, which is a fish found in Minnesota. The team did well on the court, finishing 2nd to the Pipers in the Eastern Division. In the playoffs, they made it to the Division Finals, but the Muskies lost in 5 games to the Pipers. However, this proved to be the only season for the Muskies due to losing money (reportedly $400,000) with middling attendance with minimal season tickets purchased (In the five playoff games played in Minnesota, they averaged 3,511 in attendance, with the highest being 8,357 for Game 3 of the Division Finals and the lowest being 661 for Game 1 of the Semifinals). 1967–68 Kentucky Colonels Season
The 1967–68 Kentucky Colonels season was the first season of the Colonels in the newly created American Basketball Association. The team was created on March 6, 1967, with Don Regan being awarded the team for $30,000. Later in the year, Joseph Gregory, Mamie Gregory and William C. Boone became owners. The Colonels finished tied for fourth place in the ABA's Eastern Division with the New Jersey Americans, and a one-game playoff was to be played on March 23, the day after the Colonels had won the final game of the season over the Indiana Pacers 119–106. However, the conditions of the arena where the game was to be taken place were deemed to be in poor condition. Jerry Baker (announcer)
Jerry Baker is well known and recognizable as a veteran sports announcer in Indiana. He is best known as the voice of the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) Basketball State Championships on television having served as the anchor announcer for nearly 30 years. He is the former voice of the Indiana Pacers and currently is a reporter for the Indy Racing League (IRL), and the Brickyard 400. He has long held the position as the turn 1 announcer on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network during the airing of the Indianapolis 500. Baker, most recently, was the play-by-play announcer for HomeTown Sports and News (HTSN) on Friday nights on WRTV digital side channel 6.2 and Hometown Sports Indiana. WXNT (1430 AM) is a commercial radio station in Indianapolis, Indiana. The station is owned by Cumulus Media, and carries an all-sports radio format, as an affiliate of the CBS Sports Radio Network. WXNT's schedule consists of CBS Sports Radio shows and live sporting events. WXNT studios and offices are located on N. Meridian Street, along with sister stations 99.5 WZPL and 107.9 WNTR. KCOH
KCOH (1230 AM) is a commercial radio station in Houston, Texas that airs an urban talk/urban contemporary format. It is a return to the heritage format that aired in Houston from 1953 to 2013 on 1430 KCOH, moving to this facility after 1430 was sold. KCOH returned to the legendary music format on March 14, 2019, while KCOH officially relaunched on Monday April 15, 2019 as "1230 KCOH, The Source", featuring many of the long-time KCOH shows from the original station, and the return of such legendary KCOH personalities as Don Sam and Ralph Cooper. 1967–68 Houston Mavericks Season
The 1967–68 Houston Mavericks season was the first season of the Mavericks in the American Basketball Association. On February 2, 1967, Houston was awarded a franchise for $30,000 with William Whitmore, Charles Frazier and Cloyce Box being the buyers. Later that year, T.S. Morrow and Bud Adams, owner of a Houston-based oil company and the AFL's Houston Oilers bought Box's interest in the team. Morrow would be majority owner while Adams was a minority owner. The team had less than stellar attendance, with 3,091 attending the first ever game versus the Chaparrals on October 23, 1967 (losing 100–83). The lowest attended game was held on February 5, 1968, when only 575 people attended. The highest attended game was on February 29, 1968, with 4,965 attendance. 1967–68 Denver Rockets Season
The 1967–68 ABA season was the inaugural season of the American Basketball Association and the Denver Rockets. This was the first professional basketball played in Denver since the original Denver Nuggets disbanded in 1950. They finished 45-33, which was good enough to qualify for a playoff spot, as the third team out of four. They lost in the first round. This was their first of three consecutive playoff appearances, and first of ten appearances in the franchise's first twelve years.
