2014 Winter Paralympics
The 2014 Winter Paralympics (russian: Зимние Паралимпийские игры 2014, Zimniye Paralimpiyskiye igry 2014), the 11th Paralympic Winter Games, and also more generally known as the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, were an international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), held in Sochi, Russia from 7 to 16 March 2014. 45 National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) participated in the Games, which marked the first time Russia ever hosted the Paralympics. The Games featured 72 medal events in five sports, and saw the debut of snowboarding at the Winter Paralympics. The lead-up to these Paralympics were met with concerns regarding Russia's military intervention in the nearby Crimean peninsula of Ukraine the month before the opening of the games. Kelly Gallagher (alpine Skier)
Kelly Gallagher MBE (born 18 May 1985), is a retired British skier and the first athlete from Northern Ireland to compete in the Winter Paralympics. Gallagher won Britain's first ever Winter Paralympic gold medal during Sochi 2014. Childhood Kelly was born on 18 May 1985 and was raised in Bangor in the north of County Down. Her father, Patrick Gallagher, was an airline pilot. She is a graduate in mathematics from the University of Bath. Pre-Paralympics Kelly has oculocutaneous albinism, is visually impaired and competes with a sighted guide. At the 2009 New Zealand Winter Games Gallagher, competing with guide Claire Robb, won gold in her first ever international race, the giant slalom. Danelle D’Aquanni Umstead (born February 15, 1972) is an American alpine skier and Paralympian. She is part of the US Paralympics team. She competed at the women's slalom, giant slalom, downhill, Super-G and combined at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver, with her husband Rob Umstead as her sighted guide. They took the bronze medal at the downhill and combined. She also competed in the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, winning a bronze medal in the super combined. Kimberly Joines
Kimberly Joines (born January 27, 1981 in Edmonton) is a Canadian alpine skier. While snowboarding in the year 2000 Kimberly was involved in a snowboarding accident. The accident resulted in spinal cord injuries at the L1/T12 vertebra and consequently she is paralysed from the waist down. She subsequently joined the Canadian para-alpine ski team. She competed in the 2010 Vancouver Paralympics in five events: Downhill (women’s sitting), Super G (Women’s sitting), Super combined (Women’s sitting), giant slalom (Women’s sitting) and Slalom (Women’s sitting). Joines won a bronze medal at the Torino Paralympic games in 2006. She was suspended in 2007 after being tested positive for marijuana. Anna-Lena Forster (born 15 June 1995) is a German para-alpine skier who competed at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 Winter Paralympics winning six medals. Early life Forster was born in Radolfzell, Konstanz Germany. She was born without a right leg and with bones missing in her left leg. She started skiing at the age of six at the VDK Munchen ski club. Career Forster competes in the LW12 para-alpine skiing classification using a mono-ski and outriggers. At the 2013 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships held in La Molina, Spain, she won a silver medal in the women's slalom in a time of 2 minutes 31.31 seconds. Christian Geiger
Christian Geiger (born 29 March 1988) is an Australian Alpine skier, Paralympic alpine ski coach and sighted guide for visually impaired skiers. He was Jessica Gallagher's guide skier at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, winning a bronze medal. He represented Australia at the 2008 World Junior Alpine Skiing Championships and the 2009 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, but his career was cut short when he was severely injured in a traffic collision in 2009. He became Jessica Gallagher's sighted guide in 2013, and guided her to silver medals in women's slalom and giant slalom at the 2013 IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup in Thredbo. Jessica Gallagher
Jessica Gallagher (born 14 March 1986) is an Australian Paralympic alpine skier, track and field athlete, tandem cyclist and rower. She was Australia's second female Winter Paralympian, and the first Australian woman to win a medal at the Winter Paralympics at the 2010 Vancouver Games. She competed at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, where she won a bronze medal in the women's giant slalom visually impaired. She is legally blind, and represents Australia internationally in three sports: skiing, athletics and cycling. Stephanie Jallen (born February 13, 1996), nicknamed Hopper, is an American skier. She qualified for the 2014 Winter Paralympics competing for Team USA and won a bronze in the standing super-G and super combined. Personal history Stephanie Jallen was born on 13 February 1996 in Kingston, Pennsylvania. Jallen was born with CHILD syndrome, Congenital Hemidysplasia with Ichthyosis and Limb Defects Syndrome. This meant that Jallen's left leg had to be amputated, her left side is under-developed, and she suffers from rashes. Her nickname, Hopper, comes from the fact that when her prosthetic limbs weren't being worn, she had to hop. Jallen has always been active and learned to play soccer with her friends.
