In water polo, the goalkeeper occupies a position as the last line of defense between the opponent's offence and their own team's goal, which is . The goalkeeper position is unique; they possess certain privileges and are subject to different restrictions than those of field players. Elizabeth Anne "Betsey" Armstrong (born January 31, 1983) is an American water polo Goalkeeper (water polo), goalkeeper, who won gold medals with the United States women's national water polo team at the 2012 Summer Olympics, 2007 and 2011 Pan American Games, and 2007 and 2009 world championships. She is a List of women's Olympic water polo tournament records and statistics#Top goalkeepers (all-time), leading goalkeeper in Olympic water polo history, with 102 saves. Armstrong attended Huron High School (Ann Arbor, Michigan), Huron High School in Ann Arbor and was a three-year letterwinner on her water polo team. Karla Irene van der Boon (born 9 October 1968 in Zaandam, North Holland) is a retired water polo goalkeeper from the Netherlands, who after her marriage became known as Karla Plugge. She made her debut for the Women's National Team in 1991, and was on the squad that won the gold medal at the 1991 World Championship in Perth, Australia. Van der Boon competed for her native country at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, finishing in fourth place. Ashleigh Elizabeth Johnson (born September 12, 1994) is an American water polo player considered by many to be the best goalkeeper in the world. She was part of the American team that won the gold medal at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships. In 2016, she became the first African-American woman to make the US Olympic team in water polo.
