Southern California Linux Expo
The Southern California Linux Expo (SCALE) is an annual Linux, open source and free software conference held in Los Angeles, California, since 2002. Despite having Linux in its name, SCALE covers all open source operating systems and software. It is a volunteer-run event. The event features an expo floor with both commercial and non-profit exhibitors, as well as 4 days of seminars on the topic of Linux and Open Source software. Sessions and presentations cover a broad spectrum of topics and technical levels. SCALE grew out of a series of LUGFests put on by the Simi Conejo Linux Users Group in the late 90s. There were four of them, held every 6 months at the Nortel development facility in Simi Valley, California. They ended when Nortel closed that facility in 2001. SEUL
Simple End User Linux is an advocacy group that promotes Linux programs in education and science. SEUL also hosts numerous free software projects and efforts, such as the WorldForge Project's website. The SEUL/Edu project seeks to further the use of Linux and open-source software in schools and was one of the groups which laid the groundwork for the SchoolForge project. The SEUL/Sci project (now dormant) focused on the use of Linux and Free Software in research. Other project of note connected to SEUL is Tor (network). RLUG
RLUG stands for Romanian Linux Users Group. RLUG is the largest and oldest Linux community in Romania, formed around 1999, with more than 2000 members subscribed to the main mailing list. RLUG is an unofficial organization that promotes Linux and other Unix-like operating systems in Romania as well as free and open source software in general. RLUG offers help for Linux/Unix/OSS users through its wiki, dedicated mailing lists and IRC, and hosts a number of software mirrors. NYLUG
NYLUG (New York Linux Users Group) is a LUG ( Linux User Group) based out of New York City. NYLUG supports all things Linux and FLOSS in the greater New York City area. NYLUG meets on a monthly basis, and features a speaker or speakers who give presentations of interest to the NYLUG membership. These presentations are generally either technical or related to FLOSS. NYLUG's first presentation was in January, 1999 and NYLUG has been in continuous operation since then. As such, NYLUG is the oldest LUG in New York City. NYLUG also runs a number of popular mailing lists and an IRC channel. In addition to monthly presentations, NYLUG holds monthly workshops and occasional social events for its membership. LinuxChix
LinuxChix is a women-oriented Linux community. It was formed to provide both technical and social support for women Linux users, although men are encouraged to contribute. Members of the community are referred to as "a Linux chick" (singular) and "LinuxChix" or "Linux Chix" (plural) regardless of gender. History LinuxChix was founded in 1999 by Deb Richardson, who was a technical writer and web-master at an open source consulting firm. Her reason for founding LinuxChix was to create an alternative to the "locker room mentality" of some other Linux User Groups and forums. There are two core rules: "be polite and be helpful." Linux Users Of Victoria
Linux Users of Victoria ("LUV") is a Linux User Group ("LUG") based in the state of Victoria, Australia. One of the largest and oldest Linux User Groups in Australia, it was incorporated in 1993 as a not for profit group. It now has close to fifteen hundred members. It used to have regional SIGs but they are currently inactive. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month via Jitsi or BBB. Linux Australia is the national, Australian Free and Open Source Software Community organisation. It was founded in 1997 and formally incorporated in New South Wales as a non-profit organisation in 1999. Linux Australia aims to represent Australian Free and Open Source Software communities and to support and collaborate with related groups, including Linux User Groups in Australia. Lanka Linux User Group
Lanka Linux User Group, also known as LK-LUG, is an organization in Sri Lanka for promoting free software. Since its beginnings in 1998 with 40 members, hundreds of Linux enthusiasts from several countries have joined. Members include both home and business users of Linux. Activities of the group include helping each other over the mailing lists, educating the general public by participating at exhibitions, workshops and media, and encouraging the use of free and open-source software (FOSS) in national ICT programmes.
