List Of South Australian Commercial Icons
There have been many Adelaide and South Australian icons, some of which still exist, but few of which are still South Australian owned. With the start of the 21st century, and in conjunction with the National Trust (SA), BankSA launched its annual "Heritage Icons List", naming 8 icons per year. The following is a list of some of these and other icons. BankSA, formerly known as the Bank of South Australia, the State Bank of South Australia and the Savings Bank of South Australia is the largest bank in South Australia. It is a subsidiary of Westpac. History Bank SA, formerly known as The Bank of South Australia is a full service bank and private financial services provider offering: personal, business and corporate banking. Initially established as a savings deposit bank on March 11 1848 in South Australia (BankSA, 2021), it has a long-standing independent history serving mostly rural clients in the South Australia and Victoria fringes. Beginning as a sole employee company, John Hector, the founding employee, established the bank's deposit book in the original offices in Gawler Place, Adelaide (Ibid). Hills Hoist
A Hills Hoist is a height-adjustable rotary clothes line, designed to permit the compact hanging of wet clothes so that their maximum area can be exposed for wind drying by rotation. For decades from 1945 the devices were mainly manufactured in Adelaide, South Australia using designs and patents purchased by Lance Hill. Director successors to his company now have them in most cases manufactured in China. The manufacturer soon became nationally market-dominant and rotary washing (clothes) lines have become common across much of the world. The local emphasis led to this product name becoming the generic term from a person's name (eponym) for most residents in Australia and many in New Zealand. They are considered one of Australia's most recognisable icons, and are used frequently by artists as a metaphor for Australian suburbia in the 1950s and 1960s. Stobie Pole
A Stobie pole is a power line pole made of two steel joists held apart by a slab of concrete. It was invented by Adelaide Electric Supply Company engineer James Cyril Stobie (1895–1953). Stobie used readily available materials due to the shortage of suitably long, strong, straight and termite-resistant timber in South Australia. Southwark Bitter
Southwark ( ) is a district of Central London situated on the south bank of the River Thames, forming the north-western part of the wider modern London Borough of Southwark. The district, which is the oldest part of South London, developed due to its position at the southern end of the early versions of London Bridge#History, London Bridge, the only crossing point for many miles. West End Draught
West End Draught, commonly referred to as red tins, is a South Australian lager brewed by Lion, a subsidiary of Japanese company Kirin. It was formerly brewed by the South Australian Brewing Company on Port Road, Thebarton, which was taken over Lion in 1993. The company continued to trade as SA Brewing until 1 May 2019. Lion continues to use the name "West End Brewery" for its current brewery and website, which was the name of a former brewery on Hindley Street, taken over by SA Brewing in 1888. West End Draught is a full-strength beer with an alcohol percentage of 4.5%. Other beers formerly brewed under the West End brand were West End Export, West End Gold, and West End Light, but these are no longer manufactured. Lion (Australasian Company)
Lion is an alcoholic beverage company that operates in Australia and New Zealand, and a subsidiary of Japanese beverage conglomerate Kirin. It produces and markets a range of beer and cider in Australia, and wine in New Zealand and the United States through Distinguished Vineyards & Wine Partners. It acts as distributors for a range of spirits in New Zealand, but does not own any distilleries outright, although holding a 50% share of Four Pillars Gin in Victoria. Lion was formed in October 2009 under the name Lion Nathan National Foods when Kirin Holdings Company Limited purchased brewer Lion Nathan and merged the business with National Foods, which it had owned since 2007. The South Australian Brewing Company, Limited is a brewery located in Thebarton, South Australia, Thebarton, an inner-west suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is a subsidiary of Lion (Australasian company), Lion, which in turn is owned by Kirin Company, Kirin, a Japan-based beverage company. It manufactures West End Draught beer. The company was created in 1888 as the South Australian Brewing, Malting, and Wine and Spirit Company, from an amalgamation of the West End Brewery (Hindley Street), West End Brewery (in Hindley Street, Adelaide city centre), the Kent Town Brewery, and the wine and spirit merchants Ben Rounsevell, Rounsevell & Simms. Pie Floater
The pie floater is an Australian dish particularly common in Adelaide. It consists of a meat pie in a thick pea soup, typically with the addition of tomato sauce. Believed to have been first created in the 1890s, the pie floater gained popularity as a meal sold by South Australian pie carts. In 2003, it was recognised as a South Australian Heritage Icon. Development Pea soup with meat has long been part of English culinary history, with mentions in the 19th century, including the "pea and pie supper" (in Yorkshire), "pea soup with eel", and suet dumplings or saveloys. (Dumplings in soup were known as "floaters".) It may have developed from those dishes, which are useful for feeding groups of people on a budget: for example at a sports match or at harvest time. Torrens Lake
The River Torrens , (Karrawirra Parri / Karrawirraparri) is the most significant river of the Adelaide Plains. It was one of the main reasons for the siting of the city of Adelaide, capital of South Australia. It flows from its source in the Adelaide Hills near Mount Pleasant, across the Adelaide Plains, past the city centre and empties into Gulf St Vincent between Henley Beach South and West Beach. The upper stretches of the river and the reservoirs in its watershed supply a significant part of the city's water supply. The river is also known by the native Kaurna name for the river—Karrawirra Parri or Karrawirraparri (''karra'' meaning redgum, ''wirra'' meaning forest and ''parri'' meaning river), having been officially dual-named in 2001. Arnott's Biscuits
Arnott's Biscuits Limited is an Australian producer of biscuits and snack food. Founded in 1865, they are the largest producer of biscuits in Australia and a subsidiary of KKR. History In 1847, Scottish immigrant William Arnott opened a bakery in Morpeth, New South Wales. Later in 1865 he moved to a bakery on Hunter Street, Newcastle, providing bread, pies and biscuits for the townspeople and the ships docking at the local port. Menz Confectionery is a manufacturer of confectionery in Adelaide, South Australia. It has its origins in two companies, W. Menz & Co., a biscuit and confectionery business, and Robern, called Robern Menz from 1992 to January 2022. History of W. Menz & Co. Kitchener Bun
The Kitchener bun is a type of sweet pastry made and sold in South Australia since 1915. It consists of a bun sometimes baked, sometimes fried, made from a sweet yeasted dough similar to that used for making doughnuts, split and then filled with raspberry or strawberry jam and cream, most often with a dusting of sugar on the top. The Kitchener bun resembles the Berliner, a pastry of German origin – although distinguished from it by an open face and the use of more cream than jam – and was, in fact, known as such until anti-German sentiment in World War I led to its renaming in honour of the British field marshal Lord Kitchener. In a 1930 recipe the jam is sealed into the pastry before deep-frying in fat, and there is no mention of cream until 1934.
