List Of Scottish Football League Representative Players
The Scottish Football League XI was a representative side of the Scottish Football League (SFL). Soon after the creation of the SFL in 1890, there was a desire on the part of its officials to test its strength against its older counterpart (English) Football League. A match between the Scottish League and The Football League XI was first played in April 1892 at Pike's Lane, Bolton and ended in a 2–2 draw. The Scottish League also played representative matches against the Irish League XI, League of Ireland XI, a Welsh League XI, a Danish Combination and the Italian league. They had also played four fundraising matches during World War I and six unofficial trial matches against Scotland between 1958 and 1964 - players involved in those matches are recorded separately. The Scottish League XI was a representative side of the Scottish Football League. The team regularly played against the (English) Football League and other national league select teams between 1892 and 1980. For a long period the annual fixture between the English and Scottish leagues was only second in importance to the matches between the two national teams. The fixture declined in importance after regular European club competition was instituted in the 1950s; matches in the 1960s and 1970s were played irregularly and poorly attended. George Lewis Young (27 October 1922 – 10 January 1997) was a Scottish footballer who played as a defender. He is best remembered for his 16-year association with Rangers and for being the first player to receive more than 50 caps for the Scotland national team. George Niven
George Niven (11 June 1929 – 17 July 2008) was a Scottish footballer who played during the 1950s and 1960s as a Goalkeeper (association football), goalkeeper for Rangers F.C., Rangers and Partick Thistle F.C., Partick Thistle. Career Club Niven was signed to Rangers from Scottish Junior Football Association, junior side Coupar Angus F.C., Coupar Angus in 1951 by manager Bill Struth. He made his debut against Aberdeen F.C., Aberdeen on 19 April 1952 in the final league match of the season, which finished 1–1. John Gaulton Hubbard, MBE (16 December 1930 – 21 June 2018) was a South African footballer. Hubbard spent the majority of his career at Scottish club Rangers, and later played for English club Bury before ending his career back in Scotland with Ayr United. He was the first African player to compete in the European Cup, having played in October 1956 with Rangers versus Nice, and also the first African player to score a goal in the competition. John Stewart Wright
John Stewart Wright (1890 – 1956) was a Scottish footballer who played for Morton as a centre half, making over 400 appearances for the club between 1911 and 1925. William Reid (3 May 1884 – 13 May 1964) was a Scottish international football player and manager, who played as a striker. Playing career Club Born in Baillieston, Lanarkshire, Reid began his senior career in 1903 with Morton, whom he joined from Baillieston Thistle. He scored 11 league goals in two seasons before a move to Third Lanark in April 1906; his only official appearance for the club was in the Scottish Cup final defeat to Hearts later that month. A transfer to Motherwell followed, where he scored 35 times in two seasons before a loan spell in England with Portsmouth. Bobby Collins (footballer)
Robert Young Collins (16 February 1931 – 13 January 2014) was a Scotland international football player, best known for his successful spells at Celtic, Everton and Leeds United. Playing career Celtic Collins was born on 16 February 1931 in Govanhill, Glasgow, Scotland, the eldest of Tom and Bella Collins's six children. He signed a contract with Everton from Pollok at the age of 17, but after a contractual dispute he eventually ended up joining Celtic instead of Everton; he was also working as an apprentice cobbler at the time.
