Oceania Football Confederation
The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) is one of the six continental confederations of international association football. The OFC has 13 members, 11 of which are full members and two which are associate members not affiliated with FIFA. It promotes the game in Oceania and allows the List of men's national association football teams#OFC (Oceania), member nations to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. OFC is predominantly made up of island nations where association football is not the most popular sport, with low GDP and low population meaning very little money is generated by the OFC nations. A replay (also called a rematch) is the repetition of a match in many sports. Association football In association football, replays were often used to decide the winner in a knock-out tournament when the previous match ended in a draw, especially in finals. In 1970, FIFA (the worldwide governing body of the sport) and IFAB (the international rules committee for the sport) allowed penalty shoot-outs to be held if a match ended in a draw after extra time. The penalty shootout made its appearance immediately thereafter. The first instance of a shootout replacing a replay (rather than lots) was the final of the 1976 European championship. The 2000 OFC Nations Cup was held in Papeete, Tahiti. The six participating teams were Australia and New Zealand who qualified as of right, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu who qualified from the Melanesia Cup, the Cook Islands and Tahiti who qualified from the Polynesia Cup. The 1996 OFC Nations Cup Final was an association football match played over two-legs between Australia and Tahiti. It was the final match of the 1996 OFC Nations Cup which was the third edition of the OFC Nations Cup, a competition for national teams in the Oceania Football Confederation. This final was a repeat of the 1980 final in which Australia defeated Tahiti 4–2. Australia and Tahiti each qualified through to the final by playing in a semi-final over two legs. Australia defeating New Zealand 3–0 in their semi-final while Tahiti defeated Fiji 3–1 in the other semi-final. The 1980 OFC Nations Cup Final was an association football match that took place on 1 March 1980 at Noumea Stadium, Noumea. It was the final match of the 1980 OFC Nations Cup which was the second edition of the OFC Nations Cup, a competition for national teams in the Oceania Football Confederation. It was contested by Australia and Tahiti. The match was rescheduled from Sunday, 2 March to Saturday, 1 March at the request of Tahiti captain Erroll Bennett, who as a Latter Day Saint preferred not to play on Sundays. For Tahiti this was their second final after they appeared in the previous final which they loss to New Zealand. For Australia this was their first appearance at an OFC final after not entering the 1973 edition.
