The event is part of the athletics programme at the Olympic Games and the World Athletics Championships, and is common at championship level events. George Mambosasa
George Mambosasa (born 31 January 1964) is a Malawian former long-distance runner. George competed in both the 5000 metres and the marathon at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He finished twelfth in heat one of the 5000 metres and so failed to qualify for the next round, and he completed the marathon in 74th place. At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, he took part in the marathon but did not finish. Mambosasa was the Malawian flag carrier in the opening ceremony at these games. The 3000 metres or 3000-metre run is a track running event, also commonly known as the "3K" or "3K run", where 7.5 laps are run around an outdoor 400 m track, or 15 laps around a 200 m indoor track. It is debated whether the 3000m should be classified as a middle-distance or long-distance event.
