This is a list of high-speed craft ferry routes. Many routes are operated by catamarans, as catamarans are a faster craft than a similar sized monohulls. In the 1990s monohull HSCs with capacity for cars and buses have taken over many routes. High-speed Craft
A high-speed craft (HSC) is a high-speed water vessel for civilian use, also called a fastcraft or fast ferry. The first high-speed craft were often hydrofoils or hovercraft, but in the 1990s catamaran and monohull designs become more popular and large hydrofoils and hovercraft are no longer built. Most high-speed craft serve as passenger ferries, but the largest catamarans and monohulls also carry cars, buses, large trucks and freight. In the 1990s there were a variety of builders, but due to HSC high fuel consumption, many shipbuilders have withdrawn from this market so the construction of the largest fast ferries, up to 127 metres, has been consolidated to two Australian companies, Austal of Perth and Incat of Hobart. Frederikshavn
Frederikshavn () is a Danish town in Frederikshavn municipality, Region Nordjylland, on the northeast coast of the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark. Its name translates to "Frederik's harbor". It was originally named Fladstrand. The town has a population of 22,672 (1 January 2022), and is an important traffic portal with its ferry connections to Gothenburg in Sweden. Gothenburg
Gothenburg (; abbreviated Gbg; sv, Göteborg ) is the second-largest city in Sweden, fifth-largest in the Nordic countries, and capital of the Västra Götaland County. High-speed Sea Service
High-speed Sea Service or Stena HSS was a class of high-speed craft developed by and originally operated by Stena Line on European international ferry routes. The HSS 1500 had an in-service speed of 40 knots (75 km/h). Several patents were registered to Stena Line in the development of the HSS, and four vessels were completed between 1996 and 1997. ''Stena Explorer'', ''Stena Voyager'' and ''Stena Discovery'' were built to operate on the Irish Sea with ''Stena Carisma'' built for Scandinavian use. The newest of the craft was renamed HSS ''Discovery'' after being sold to a ferry company in Venezuela during 2009. Currently, none of the four craft originally commissioned by Stena Line operate. ''Stena Explorer'' was the last of the vessels to be retired in 2015 when Stena Line cancelled the fast ferry service between Holyhead, Wales and Dún Laoghaire, Ireland. Stena Line is a Swedish shipping line company and one of the largest ferry operators in the world. It services Denmark, Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland and Sweden. Stena Line is a major unit of Stena AB, itself a part of the Stena Sphere. The ''Betancuria Express'' is a fast passenger and vehicle ferry operated by the Canary Islands ferry company Fred. Olsen Express on the route between Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura. Ystad
Ystad (; older da, Ysted) is a town and the seat of Ystad Municipality, in Scania County, Sweden. Ystad had 18,350 inhabitants in 2010. The settlement dates from the 11th century and has become a busy ferryport, local administrative centre, and tourist attraction. The detective series ''Wallander'', created by Henning Mankell, is set primarily in Ystad. In 1285, the town's name was written ''Ystath''. Its original meaning is not fully understood, but the ''y'' probably is related to an old word for the yew tree, while ''stad'' means ''town'' or ''place''. Rønne
Rønne ( sv, Rönne) is the largest town on the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. It has a population of 13,807 (1 January 2022). It was a municipality in its own right from 1970 until 2002, when Bornholm was a county (Danish: ''Bornholms Amt''). HSC Villum Clausen
The ''WorldChampion Jet'' (former Villum Clausen) is a fast passenger ferry built in 2000 by Austal, Perth, Australia. Until 31 August 2018, it was in active service between Rønne (Bornholm in Denmark) and Ystad in Sweden. On 19 December 2017, HSC ''Villum Clausen'' was sold to the Greek based Ferry Company Seajets. Starting from the summer of 2019, it was renamed ''WorldChampion Jet'' and started sailing between Piraeus and Cyclades. HSC ''Villum Clausen'' was named after the 17th century Danish freedom fighter ''Villum Clausen'' ( da).
