This page lists diplomatic missions resident in Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, which is physiographically a part of the continent of North America. At present, the country hosts 13 honorary consuls and two fully staffed consulates general in the capital city of Nuuk. The United States opened a consulate in 1940, following the Nazi occupation of Denmark, and closed the consulate in 1953. The United States, which, alongside the European Union and Iceland, is host to a Greenland Representative Office, officially opened a consulate general in the capital Nuuk in June 2020. Greenland ( kl, Kalaallit Nunaat, ; da, Grønland, ) is an island country in North America that is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. It is located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Greenland is the world's largest island. It is one of three constituent countries that form the Kingdom of Denmark, along with Denmark and the Faroe Islands; the citizens of these countries are all citizens of Denmark and the European Union. Foreign Relations Of Greenland
Being part of the Kingdom of Denmark, the foreign relations of Greenland are handled in cooperation with the Danish government and the Government of Greenland. Unlike Denmark, Greenland is no longer part of the European Union. The High Commission of Denmark in Greenland ( kl, Kalaallit Nunaanni Naalagaaffiup Sinniisoqarfia, da, Rigsombuddet i Grønland) is a Danish institution in Greenland. Functions The High Commissioner represents the crown and the Kingdom Government (''Regeringen'') in Greenland. The office is responsible for liaising between the Territorial Self Rule Government (''Naalakkersuisut'') and the Kingdom Government. The High Commission deals with matters of family law in the capacity as Chief Administrative Officer. The Representation of Greenland in Brussels is the official representative office of Greenland to the European Union. The Representation of Greenland to the EU was established in 1992 in connection to the Royal Danish Embassy in Belgium. Since 1867, the United States has considered, or made, several proposals to purchase the island of Greenland from Denmark, as it did with the Danish West Indies in 1917. Nuuk (; da, Nuuk, formerly ) is the capital (political), capital and List of cities and towns in Greenland, largest city of Greenland, a constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark. Denmark In World War II
At the outset of World War II in September 1939, Denmark declared itself neutral. For most of the war, the country was a protectorate and then an occupied territory of Germany. The decision to occupy Denmark was taken in Berlin on 17 December 1939. On 9 April 1940, Germany occupied Denmark in Operation Weserübung. The Danish government and king functioned as relatively normal in a ''de facto'' protectorate over the country until 29 August 1943, when Germany placed Denmark under direct military occupation, which lasted until the Allied victory on 5 May 1945.
