The British high jump athletics champions covers four competitions; the current British Athletics Championships which was founded in 2007, the preceding AAA Championships (1880-2006), the Amateur Athletic Club Championships (1866-1879) and finally the UK Athletics Championships which existed from 1977 until 1997 and ran concurrently with the AAA Championships. Where an international athlete won the AAA Championships the highest ranking UK athlete is considered the National Champion in this list. British Athletics Championships
The British Athletics Championships is the premier national championship in track and field held in the United Kingdom, and are organised by British Athletics. The event has doubled as the main trials meet for international team selection for major events in which Great Britain and Northern Ireland compete, including the Olympic Games, the IAAF World Championships in Athletics and the European Athletics Championships. Only British athletes may formally compete, though in some circumstances British club-affiliated foreign athletes may take part as guests. The event was established in 2007, replacing the AAA Championships as the principal event on the domestic sport of athletics, athletics calendar in the United Kingdom. A previous event, the UK Athletics Championships had nominally been the national championship, but in effect took second billing to the "triple A's". Gladys Young
Gladys Young (29 April 1887 – 18 August 1975) was an English actress and prominent member of BBC Radio Drama Company. Peggy Chamber's 1954 book, ''Women And The World Today'', has a chapter on Gladys Young's life and achievements up to the 1950s. Early life Gladys Young was born in Newcastle, to William Michael Young & Frances Jane Hocken. She was educated at Sutton High School, and later at Bonn, in Germany. She joined a amateur dramatic club along with Mabel Constanduros and Leslie Howard. At the start of the First World War, she was in J.E. Harold Terry & Lechmere Worrall's ''The Man Who Stayed at Home'' but, in 1916, left to marry Major Algernon Henry Pascoe West. Alan Sinclair Paterson (11 June 1928 – 8 May 1999) was a British track and field athlete who competed in the high jump. He was one of Europe's best high jumpers during the immediate post-World War II period. He was the champion at the European Athletics Championships in 1950 and was also silver medallist at the 1946 event. He won a silver medal for Scotland at the 1950 British Empire Games. Dora Kathleen Gardner (6 May 1912 – June 1994) was an English track and field athlete who competed for Great Britain in the 1948 Olympic Games. She was born in Croydon. In 1948 she finished eighth in the Olympic high jump contest. At the 1938 British Empire Games she won the silver medal in the high jump event. In the long jump competition she finished seventh. Dorothy Tyler-Odam
Dorothy Jennifer Beatrice Tyler, MBE (née Odam; 14 March 1920 – 25 September 2014) was a British athlete who competed mainly in the high jump. She was born in Stockwell, London. Odam competed for Great Britain in the 1936 Summer Olympics held in Berlin, Germany where she won the silver medal behind Ibolya Csák. She jumped the highest and was the first to clear 1.60 meters, and would have won under modern countback rules, but under the 1936 rulebook a jump-off was called for, and Csák won the gold. In 1939 she broke the world record in the high jump with 1.66m, but Germany's Dora Ratjen allegedly broke her record quickly. Odam was suspicious of Ratjen and, according to Odam, "They wrote to me telling me I didn't hold the record, so I wrote to them saying, 'She's not a woman, she's a man'.
