UK Athletics Championships
The UK Athletics Championships was an annual national championship in track and field for the United Kingdom, organised by the British Athletics Federation. The event incorporated the 1980 Olympic trials for the British Olympic team. The venue for the event was rotational and designed to be inclusive – all four Home Nations hosted the event during its twenty-year existence, as well as several areas of England. Created in 1977 and open only to British athletes, the event was initiated to provide an alternative to the AAA Championships, which was open to foreign athletes and was organised by an English amateur organisation. The event failed to displace the long-established AAA event and did not attract the nation's best athletes. Wendy Smith-Sly
Wendy Sly MBE (née Smith, born 5 November 1959) is a female British former athlete, who competed mainly in the 3000 metres. She won a silver medal in the event at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She won the 1983 10km World Road Race Championships in San Diego. Early life Sly was born in Hampton, Greater London, England. She attended Spelthorne College, then studied English literature at Loughborough University from 1978-81. Career In 1978, as Wendy Smith, she finished 43rd at the World Cross Country Championships, and won a team bronze medal. In 1980, she was the UK number one in the 3000 metres and finished second in the 1500 metres at the UK Championships. In 1982, at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, she won a silver medal in the 3000 metres, running 8:48.47 behind Anne Audain. Peter Elliott (athlete)
Peter Elliott (born 9 October 1962 in Rotherham, Yorkshire) is a former middle-distance runner from the United Kingdom. During his career, he won the gold medal in the 1500 metres at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, the silver medal in the 1500 metres at the 1988 Olympic Games, and the silver medal in the 800 metres at the 1987 World Championships. Biography Elliott was brought up in Rawmarsh, near Rotherham, in the then West Riding of Yorkshire. He attended Rawmarsh Comprehensive School and later worked as a joiner at British Steel Corporation. He managed to establish himself as a world class athlete while working full-time. Tom Hanlon (athlete)
Tom Hanlon (born 20 May 1967) is a Scottish former athlete who competed mainly in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He represented Great Britain at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He also represented Great Britain at two World Championships, and Scotland at two Commonwealth Games. His best time for the 3000m steeplechase of 8:12.58 on 3 August 1991 in Monaco, is the Scottish record (as of 2016) and ranks him third on the British all-time list behind Mark Rowland and Colin Reitz. Hanlon was born in West Germany. His father was a royal signals warrant officer. He finished fourth in the 2000m steeplechase at both the 1985 European Junior Championships, and the 1986 World Junior Championships. Andrea Wallace
Andrea Wallace (born 22 November 1966) is an English former long-distance runner who represented Great Britain in the 10,000 metres at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. She also won a silver medal over 15 km at the 1991 IAAF World Women's Road Race Championships in Nieuwegein. Career Wallace was born in Northallerton, Yorkshire, England and was a member of Torbay Athletics Club. She emerged as one of the UK's leading distance runners in 1990, winning the UK World Cross-Country trial in Glasgow, before going on to win the UK National 3000 metres title and the AAA Championships National 10,000 metres title on the track. Matthew Clarkson (October 17, 1758 – April 25, 1825) was a colonial soldier and politician. Clarkson Street in Greenwich Village and the town of Clarkson in Western New York were both named after him. Early life Clarkson was born on October 17, 1758, at his father's residence on Whitehall Street in New York City in the Province of New York in what was then British America. Elizabeth Nuttall (née Lynch, formerly McColgan; born 24 May 1964) is a Scottish former middle-distance and long-distance track and road-running athlete. She won the gold medal for the 10,000 metres at the 1991 World Championships, and a silver medal over the same distance at the 1988 Olympic Games. Alison Wyeth (born 26 May 1964) is a female English former middle and long-distance runner. Athletics career Wyeth represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games in 1992 and 1996, as well as at three World Championships, finishing 5th in the 3000 metres final at the 1993 World Championships. David Moorcroft
David Robert Moorcroft (born 10 April 1953) is a former middle-distance and long-distance runner from England, and former world record holder for 5,000 metres. His athletic career spanned the late-1970s and 1980s. He subsequently served as the Chief Executive of UK Athletics from 1997 to 2007. He was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1983 and promoted to an Officer (OBE) in 1999, in both cases for services to athletics. Tony Leonard (athlete)
Anthony Leonard (born 19 December 1955) is an Australian radio presenter. Career In 1982, he joined the radio comedy team Coodabeen Champions, who were then on 3RRR. Following them to 3LO and 3AW he stayed with this team until 2002. He began commentating AFL matches on 3AW in 1996 and he used to present a Saturday morning 3AW show called "Glossing Over" with Trevor Marmalade and Dr. Turf, until it was axed on 21 June 2007, following 3AW's poor ratings in the football timeslots.
