Tollywood Bangla
Tollywood, also known as Cinema of West Bengal, is an Cinema of India, Indian film industry of Bengali language, Bengali-language motion pictures. It is based in the Tollygunge region of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The origins of the nickname Tollywood, a portmanteau of the words Tollygunge and Cinema of the United States, Hollywood, dates back to 1932. It was a historically important film industry, at one time the centre of Indian film production. Gyanesh Mukherjee
Gyanesh Mukherjee (5 July 1926 – 8 May 2008) was a Bengali actor, director and theater personality. Career He was involved with Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA). In his film career, Mukherjee worked with number of famous directors like Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen and Tapan Sinha. Since late 50s to 70s, he played prolific role in cinema as well as theater. In 1973 he directed the film ''Achena Atithi'' which was remade in Hindi as ''Anjane Mehmaan'' in 1975. He founded Mass theaters group in Kolkata. Mukherjee passed away in Kolkata on 8 may, 2008. Basanta Choudhury
Basanta Choudhury (also Chowdhury; 5 May 1928 – 20 June 2000) was an Indian actor in Bengali and Hindi films. He worked with directors Asit Sen, Rajen Tarafdar, Ajay Kar and Bijay Bose, often in leading roles. He is a former Sheriff of Kolkata. Choudhury's collection of Kashmiri and Persian shawls were enviable. Director Satyajit Ray admired those collections and used for his masterpieces. Birth and childhood Basanta Chowdhury was born into an affluent Datta Chowdhury family of Andul, Howrah. In the circa year of 1886 AD, his great-great forefather Apurba Krishna Dutta Chaudhuri discontinued with the surname 'Dutta' and moved from his ancestral place Andul to Nagpur to practice Law. He later became the Law Lecturer in the Morris College (the present-day Vasantrao Naik Government Institute of Arts and Social Sciences (VNGIASS)). Rituparno Ghosh
Rituparno Ghosh (31 August 1963 – 30 May 2013) was an Indian film director, actor, writer and lyricist. After pursuing a degree in economics, he started his career as a creative artist at an advertising agency. He received recognition for his second feature film ''Unishe April'' which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. Having won 19 National Awards, along with his contemporaries Aparna Sen and Goutam Ghose, Rituparno heralded contemporary Cinema of West Bengal, Bengali cinema to greater heights. Ghosh died on 30 May 2013 in Kolkata after a heart attack. Ghosh was also one of the openly homosexual personalities in Indian cinema. Ghosh was influenced by the works of Satyajit Ray and was an avid reader of Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore's works are frequently referenced to in his films. ''Hirer Angti'' ( bn, হীরের আংটি) is a 1992 Bengali film by Rituporno Ghosh based on a story of the same name by Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay. Plot Gandharva Kumar's arrival disrupts the festive mood of Durga Puja at Ratanlal Babu's house. Gandharva captivates Ratanlal's grandchildren, Habul and Tinni, with his magical tricks. He then reveals a long-forgotten secret wherein he claims to be heir to Ratanlal's ancestral property. This shocks the entire family and casts a gloom, following dramatic incidents. It is revealed that Gandharva is fake. Whether the magic trick works or not for Gandharva Kumar forms the climax. Tapen Chatterjee
Tapen Chatterjee (3 September 1937 – 24 May 2010) was a Bengali actor from India who played several roles in Satyajit Ray's films, notably as Goopy Gyne in ''Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne'' (1968), and its sequels '' Heerak Rajar Deshe'' (1980) and ''Goopy Bagha Phire Elo'' (1991). Chatterjee died on 24 May 2010 at the age of 72. He was suffering from pulmonary ailments. Career As a qualified engineer, Chatterjee had a job in Rajasthan, following which he came back to Kolkata and joined ''Sandesh'', the Bengali magazine revived by Satyajit Ray. He started his career in the advertisement department of the children's magazine Sandesh. Sandip Ray
Sandip Ray (born 8 September 1953) is an Indian film director and music director who mainly works in Bengali cinema. He is the only child of the famous Bengali director Satyajit Ray and Bijoya Ray. Life and education Sandip Ray was born in Calcutta. Initially schooled at the South Point School and the Patha Bhavan, Kolkata, he subsequently attended the University of Calcutta. Career Ray started his professional career in film at the age of 24 as assistant director on the sets of his father's film ''Shatranj Ke Khilari'' (''The Chess Players'', 1977). Prior to this, he had aided his father in various capacities including still photographer on set. ''Goopy Bagha Phirey Elo'' () is a 1992 Indian Bengali language comedy film directed by Sandip Ray and written by Satyajit Ray. A sequel to the 1980 film ''Hirak Rajar Deshe'' and the third installment of '' Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne series'', the film was released eleven years after its predecessor.
