Lisa Dent Gallery
Lisa Dent Gallery was a contemporary art gallery located in San Francisco, California. History Curator, dealer and gallerist, Lisa Dent founded her gallery in 2004. It was first located at 666 Mission Street, across from the Cartoon Art Museum and around the corner from SF MoMA. In September 2007 the gallery moved to 2101 Sacramento Street, around the corner from Anthony Meier Fine Arts. The gallery closed in 2008. Exhibitions The gallery represented emerging American and international artists, including notable artists' first solo exhibitions. In 2004 the gallery exhibited one of Hank Willis Thomas's first solo shows. His show "Unbranded: Reflections in Black by Corporate America" was also featured at Lisa Dent Gallery in 2006. The series used photographs from magazine ads to parody the appropriation of black bodies for commercial use. Contemporary art is the art of today, produced in the second half of the 20th century or in the 21st century. Visual Anthropology
Visual anthropology is a subfield of social anthropology that is concerned, in part, with the study and production of ethnographic photography, film and, since the mid-1990s, new media. Basil Twist
Basil Twist is a New York City-based puppeteer who is known for his underwater puppet show, "''Symphonie Fantastique''". He was named a MacArthur Fellowship recipient on September 29, 2015. Life and work Originally from San Francisco, Basil Twist is a third generation puppeteer. He graduated from the École Supérieure Nationale des Arts de la Marionnette in Charleville-Mézières, France. He is founder and director of the Dream Music Puppetry Program at Here Arts Center in NYC, which supports and produces new puppet artists. He was a Fall 2015 MacArthur Fellow at the NYU Center for Ballet and the Arts. Twist has significantly contributed to the art of puppetry since 1998. Flo McGarrell
Flores "Flo" McGarrell (August 31, 1974 – January 12, 2010) was an American artist, filmmaker, writer and arts administrator. He was raised in Umbertide, Italy and St. Louis, Missouri, United States. He lived and worked in Roswell, New Mexico, San Francisco, California, Newbury, Vermont and Jacmel, Haiti. He specialized in agri-sculpture - sculpture constructed from recycled and organic material and plants. In Jacmel, he directed a nonprofit arts center called FOSAJ. Marcia Kure
Marcia Kure (born 1970) is a Nigerian visual artist known primarily for her mixed media paintings and drawings that engage with postcolonial existentialist conditions and identities. Early life and education Kure was born in Kano State, Nigeria. She trained at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka under painter Obiora Udechukwu and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in painting in 1994.
