Andro Linklater
Andro Ian Robert Linklater (10 December 1944 – 3 November 2013) was a Scottish non-fiction writer and historian. Life He was the youngest son of Eric Linklater, a poet, and Marjorie MacIntyre, an arts campaigner. His brother is journalist, Magnus Linklater and his sisters are the voice expert Kristin Linklater and painter Alison Linklater. His nephew, son of Kristin, is film actor Hamish Linklater. He was educated at Belhaven Hill School, Winchester College and New College, Oxford, where he read Modern History. At the end of the 1960s he lived in the United States, but returned to Britain to teach in Scotland and London, before turning to writing after his father's death in 1974. His book ''Measuring America'' led to a series of books on American history, about which he was an eloquent speaker. Eric Robert Russell Linklater CBE (8 March 1899 – 7 November 1974) was a Welsh-born Scottish poet, fiction writer, military historian, and travel writer. For ''The Wind on the Moon'', a children's fantasy novel, he won the 1944 Carnegie Medal from the Library Association for the year's best children's book by a British subject. Frederick Harvie Linklater (c. 1849 – 1 October 1937) was an English barrister who had a prominent career in Australia. He was the author of several important legal works and popular stage plays. He was personally involved in a bigamous marriage and two libel cases, then was accused of master-minding an insurance fraud. He changed legal jurisdictions several times in what appears to be attempts to start afresh. History Linklater was born in 1847 or c. 1849, the son of a London solicitor who specialized in bankruptcy. Joseph Linklater
Joseph Linklater (12 March 1876 – 25 April 1961) was a Reform Party Member of Parliament. Military service Linklater saw active service as a private in the 6th New Zealand Contingent during the Second Boer War. During World War I he was a second lieutenant in the New Zealand Services Motor-Service Corps. Political career He was elected to the Manawatu electorate in the 1922 general election after Edward Newman retired, and held the electorate until he was defeated by Labour's Lorrie Hunter in 1935. Magnus Duncan Linklater, CBE (born 21 February 1942) is a Scottish journalist, writer, and former newspaper editor. Early life and education Linklater was born in Orkney, and is the son of Scottish writer Eric Linklater and arts campaigner Marjorie MacIntyre. He was brought up in Easter Ross, attending the local school at Nigg before moving to Belhaven Hill School in Dunbar, East Lothian, and then on to Eton College. Marjorie Linklater
Marjorie Linklater ( MacIntyre; 19 March 1909 – 29 June 1997) was a Scottish campaigner for the arts and environment on the island of Orkney. She gave up acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art to get involved in conservation, education, and health matters as a county councillor for Ross and Cromarty County Council. In 1975, Linklater was elected chairman of the Orkney Heritage Society, devoting herself to campaigning for the arts environment, local heritage, and politics. She successfully opposed the mining of uranium and the dumping of nuclear waste off Orkney's west coast and was a founding member of the St Magnus Festival. The Orkney Heritage Society named a senior school award in Linklater's honour following her death.
