The City of Doncaster is a metropolitan borough with city status in South Yorkshire, England. It is named after its principal settlement, Doncaster, and includes the surrounding suburbs of Doncaster as well as numerous towns and villages. The district has large amounts of countryside. At 219 sq miles, it is the largest metropolitan borough by area in England. The largest settlement in the borough are Doncaster itself, followed by the towns of Thorne, Hatfield and Mexborough (the latter of which is part of the Barnsley/Dearne Valley built-up area), and it additionally covers the towns of Conisbrough, Stainforth, Bawtry, Askern, Edlington and Tickhill. RAF Lindholme
Royal Air Force Station Lindholme or more simply RAF Lindholme is a former Royal Air Force station in South Yorkshire, England. It was located south of Thorne and north east of Doncaster and was initially called RAF Hatfield Woodhouse. Early years RAF Lindholme started life as an expansion scheme aerodrome built on the wide expanse of Hatfield moors, some east of Doncaster. The site, to the east of the A614 Thorne to Bawtry road, was a mile south of the small village of Hatfield Woodhouse, the name first selected for the new station, however, stores and correspondence was getting waylaid between the station and Hatfield Aerodrome in Hertfordshire, so in August 1940, the name was changed to Lindholme. Work began in the spring of 1938 taking in approximately of pasture for the airfield itself and a further 150 for the camp and support facilities. HM Prison Lindholme
HM Prison Lindholme is a Category C/D men's prison located near Hatfield Woodhouse in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. Lindholme is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service, and is situated in close proximity to Hatfield and Moorland prisons History The site was originally constructed as RAF Lindholme during the Second World War to house and operate bombers. During the RAF station's lifetime it was home to the RAF Bomber Command Bombing School (BCBS) and also the RAF Navigation School. BCBS moved out in 1972, and RAF Lindholme became a radar installation with its hangars converted for storage, eventually being downgraded to a relief glider landing field and closing altogether shortly thereafter. The site, which occupies , re-opened as a prison in 1985.
