Linden, Guyana
Linden is the second largest city in Guyana after Georgetown, Guyana, Georgetown, and capital of the Upper Demerara-Berbice region, located at , altitude . It was declared a town in 1970, and includes the communities of MacKenzie, Christianburg, and Wismar. It lies on the Demerara River and has a population of 27,277 as of 2012. It is primarily a bauxite mining town, containing many mines 60–90 m deep, with many other pits now in disuse. 1928 Summer Olympics
The 1928 Summer Olympics (), officially the Games of the IX Olympiad (), was an international multi-sport event that was celebrated from 28 July to 12 August 1928 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The city of Amsterdam had previously bid for the 1920 and 1924 Olympic Games. Still, it was obliged to give way to war-torn Antwerp in Belgium for the 1920 Summer Olympics, 1920 Games and Pierre de Coubertin's Paris for the 1924 Summer Olympics, 1924 Games. The only other candidate city for the 1928 Olympics was Los Angeles, which would eventually be selected to host the Olympics four years later. Soesdyke-Linden Highway
The Soesdyke-Linden Highway is a 2-lane highway that runs between Soesdyke and Linden in Guyana. The East Bank Public Road connects Soesdyke with Georgetown. Construction The Soesdyke-Linden highway was constructed between 1966 and 1968 by B.B. Mc. Cormick & Sons. It cost approximately US$17 million to build. The highway was officially opened in 1969. The Soesdyke-Linden Highway was constructed as one phase of a highway connecting Georgetown with Lethem. A feasibility study for such a highway was done by a US consulting firm, Metcalf and Eddy, in 1961. Jeremy Bascom (born 1981) is a Guyanese sprinter. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he competed in the Men's 100 metres, where he equaled the Guyanese national record in the distance. Guyana National Football Team
The Guyana national football team, nicknamed the ''Golden Jaguars'', represents Guyana in international football and is controlled by the Guyana Football Federation. It is one of three South American nations to be a member of the Caribbean Football Union of CONCACAF alongside Suriname and French Guiana. Marian Burnett
Marian Joan Burnett (born 22 February 1976) is a female middle-distance runner from Guyana who specialises in the 800 metres. She competed in the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympic Games, reaching the second heat of the 800 metres on both occasions. She won her first international medal at the 1999 Central American and Caribbean Championships in Athletics, where she finished third in the 1500 metres. She went to study at Louisiana State University and, representing the LSU Lady Tigers track and field team, she took the 800 m NCAA indoor title in 2002. She competed for Guyana at the 2003 Pan American Games and after initially finishing third in the 800 m, she was promoted to the silver medal after event winner Letitia Vriesde was disqualified for excessive caffeine use.
