Lincoln (electoral District)
Lincoln was a federal Electoral district (Canada), electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1883 and from 1904 to 1997. It was on the Niagara Peninsula in the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of Ontario. At various times, there was also an electoral district of the same name used in List of Ontario general elections, provincial elections. At various times, the riding included all or parts of the former Lincoln County, Ontario, Lincoln County (including its successor, the Niagara Regional Municipality, Ontario, Regional Municipality of Niagara). After 1976, it also represented parts of the Hamilton-Wentworth Regional Municipality, Ontario, Regional Municipality of Hamilton-Wentworth, mainly Stoney Creek, Ontario, Stoney Creek. Thomas Rodman Merritt
Thomas Rodman Merritt (October 17, 1824 – January 11, 1906) was a Canadian businessman and political figure in Upper Canada, later Ontario, Canada. He represented Lincoln in the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal member from 1868 to 1874. He was born in Mayville, New York in 1824, the son of William Hamilton Merritt. He studied at Upper Canada College and Grantham Academy in St. Catharines. In 1839, he was working at a store in St. Catharines. In 1843, he opened a general store there in partnership with James Rea Benson. The partners bought flour mills and had two ships built to transport flour. The partnership split up in 1849 and Merritt kept the mills and ships. In 1850, he set up a shipping line that transported goods to Brantford and returned to St. Catharines with wheat. Shirley Martin
Shirley Martin (November 20, 1932 in Hamilton, Ontario – September 16, 2021) was a Canadian politician. Martin was a businesswoman and was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1984 federal election as the Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament for Lincoln, Ontario. In 1987, she became Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works. After the 1988 federal election, she joined Prime Minister Brian Mulroney's Cabinet as Minister of State for Transport. She served briefly as Minister of State for Indian Affairs and Northern Development (1990–1991) before returning to the Transport portfolio. Bryce Mackasey
Bryce Stuart Mackasey, (August 25, 1921 – September 5, 1999) was a Canadian Member of Parliament, Cabinet minister, and Ambassador to Portugal. Born in Quebec City, Quebec, he was elected as a Liberal candidate in the riding of Verdun in the 1962 federal election. He was re-elected in the 1963, 1965, 1968, 1972, and 1974 elections. He resigned in 1976 to run in the Quebec provincial election that year, and was elected to the Quebec National Assembly for the riding of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. William "Bill" Andres, Jr. (August 2, 1925 – September 23, 2010) was a Canadian politician and farmer. He was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1974 election as a member of the Liberal Party to represent the Ontario riding of Lincoln. John Smith (Ontario MP)
John Smith (February 18, 1894 – November 8, 1977) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He represented Lincoln in the House of Commons of Canada as a Progressive Conservative member from 1957 to 1962. He was born in Scotland in 1894, the son of Daniel Smith and Annie Douglas, and grew up there. Smith was a building contractor in St. Catharines. He served in the Canadian Army during World War I. Harry Cavers
Harry Peter Cavers (27 December 1909 – 7 December 1995) was a Liberal party member of the House of Commons of Canada, barrister and judge. He was born in St. Catharines, Ontario. The son of Harry A. Cavers and Mabel Laura Lyons, he was educated in St. Catharines and at the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall. Cavers was called to the Ontario bar in 1935 and practised law in St. Catharines. He was named Queen's Counsel in 1961. Cavers served as a lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve from 1942 to 1945. He was first elected at the Lincoln riding in the 1949 general election then re-elected in 1953. Cavers was defeated at Lincoln in the 1957 election by John Smith of the Progressive Conservative party. Norman James Macdonald Lockhart (10 April 1884 – 30 August 1974) was a Canadian businessman and politician. Lockhart was a Conservative and Progressive Conservative party member of the House of Commons of Canada. Biography Lockhart was born in Dunnville, Ontario and became a merchant by career. James Dew Chaplin
James Dew Chaplin, (March 20, 1863 – August 23, 1937) was a Canadian politician. Born in Toronto, Canada West, the son of William Lamont Chaplin and Harriet Dew, Chaplin was educated at the Public Schools and St. Catharines Collegiate Institute. A manufacturer in St. Catharines, Ontario, he was president of the Chaplin Wheel Company, Canada Axe and Harvest Tool Company, and the Wallingford Manufacturing Company. Chaplin served four years as a member of St. Catharines city council. He was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada representing the riding of Lincoln in the 1917 federal election. A Conservative, he was re-elected in 1921, 1925, 1926, and 1930. In 1926, he was the Minister of Trade and Commerce in the short lived cabinet of Arthur Meighen.
