Lil' Chief Records
Lil' Chief Records is a New Zealand–based indie pop record label formed in 2002. Operating from the Auckland suburb of Mt. Eden, it was founded on releases by The Tokey Tones and The Brunettes. The label's roster now includes a collective of pop artists such as Jonathan Bree, Princess Chelsea, The Ruby Suns, and Edmund Cake. History Founding Lil' Chief Records was founded in New Zealand by indie pop musicians Scott Mannion and Jonathan Bree in 2002. The two men had met that year in Marbecks Record Store in Auckland, where Bree was working at the time. They discovered they were both bedroom recording artists who shared a number of influences. Likewise, both were having difficulty finishing their respective albums and finding a label, particularly since the trend in New Zealand at the time was towards guitar-based rock bands. Jonathan Bree
Jonathan Owen Bree is a singer-songwriter and producer from New Zealand, best known for his work as a solo artist, as well as co-founding the indie pop group The Brunettes, in 1998 and Lil' Chief Records, in 2002. He frequently collaborates with label-mates as a musician, engineer, and record producer. Early life Jonathan Bree was born in New Zealand. Mark Lyons, frontman of indie pop band The Nudie Suits, was both Bree's cousin and a mentor in Bree's formative years. When Bree was ten, Lyons introduced him to Modern Lovers, with Bree becoming a long-term fan. At 12 years old, Bree first played live (and recorded) as the drummer in Lyons' band, The Plaster Saints. Alec Bathgate is a New Zealand musician who was a key member of The Enemy and Toy Love, as well as being one half of the Flying Nun Records act Tall Dwarfs, alongside Chris Knox. Shaft (New Zealand Band)
Shaft is the long-standing vehicle of songwriter Robert Cardy (aka Bob Brannigan), original guitarist for the band The Axemen and a stalwart of the New Zealand underground scene. When the Axemen took a break in 1992, Cardy was jamming with Axemen drummer Stu Kawowski for a while, and one day bumped into guitarist John Segovia at a gas station. Soon after Daniel "Speedy" Mañetto came on board as bass player. This original line-up stayed together for around a year or two, and then one by one Segovia, Mañetto and Kawowski departed. Cardy then put together a more hard-edged version of Shaft with Tony Rush (bass – moved to Wellington and joined The Users) and Rich Mixture (drums – joined The Rock'n'Roll Machine), with former Axel Grinders guitarist John Segovia (who left to form The Radio Kings) joining soon after. Downtown Puff
''Downtown Puff'' is a solo album by Edmund Cake. Although multi-instrumentalist Cake played various instruments and performed vocals on the album, other musicians and singers on the album include Anna Coddington, Neil Finn and Tim Finn. Geoff Maddock and Joel Wilton of Cake's short-lived earlier band and Flying Nun phenomenon Bressa Creeting Cake, now of Goldenhorse, also appear on the album. McWilliams wrote and recorded many of the songs on the album in a studio on Gore Street - a red-light area in Auckland. According to a biography of Cake, the album was influenced by this environment, including "incessant street brawls, strip club pop, and Doobie Brothers hits played by the covers band in the 24-hour bar downstairs." The album includes instrumental tracks such as "Airshow" and "You're Watching Me", and vocal tracks such as "Secret Girl" described by McWilliams as a comedy song that 'came out serious'. The Nudie Suits
The Nudie Suits were a New Zealand band consisting of Mark Lyons (vocals, guitar) and sisters Dionne Taylor (steel guitar, harmony vocals, autoharp) and Tam Taylor (violin). They began their career in Auckland but relocated to Melbourne for a few years in the early 2000s. The band released two albums on Lil' Chief Records. The Nudie Suits debut album Songbook received some excellent reviews and was described as "Something of tremendous, charm and enormous vitality." by Chris Knox of Real Groove Magazine. Their follow-up album, Sweetacres, was a concept album based on Lyons' childhood in an Auckland suburb and was said to "exude(s) the vintage charm and warm glow of an antique valve radio", according to Russel Baillie from The New Zealand Herald. A third Nudie Suits album was announced in 2008, to feature a new rhythm section of Rob Collins (bass) and Ivan Hyphen Johnston (drums), but has not, to present, eventuated.
