The Libertarian Party of North Carolina (LPNC) is the North Carolina affiliate of the Libertarian Party (United States), Libertarian Party. History The Liberatarian Party of North Carolina was founded in 1976, and has fielded candidates for president and governor in every election since then (except 1988). In order to do so, they have performed eight petition drives so that they can gain recognition from the state, allowing to maintain consistent ballot status from 1996 to 2004 and field 300 candidates for a variety of offices. Roy Cooper
Roy Asberry Cooper III (born June 13, 1957) is an American attorney and politician, serving as the 75th governor of North Carolina since 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 49th attorney general of North Carolina from 2001 to 2017. He also served in the North Carolina General Assembly in both the House of Representatives (1987–1991) and Senate (1991–2001). Cooper defeated Republican incumbent Pat McCrory for the governorship in a close race in the 2016 election. On December 5, McCrory conceded the election, making Cooper the first challenger to defeat a sitting governor in the state's history. Cooper took office on January 1, 2017. The Republican-dominated legislature passed bills in a special session before he took office to reduce the power of the governor's office. North Carolina Green Party
The North Carolina Green Party is a political party in the state of North Carolina, and the NC affiliate of the Green Party of the United States. It has officially qualified for ballot access until 2020 statewide election. Since 2006, it has worked in collaboration with other organizations seeking to reform state election laws. The state party has five chapters, which are located in the Charlotte, Triad, and Triangle metropolitan areas and the Eastern and Western areas of the state. It is listed in ''The A to Z of the Green Movement'', which was published in 2007. The party ran four candidates in November, 2018, including state legislative and congressional races. In August 2022, the North Carolina State Board of Elections voted to recognize the North Carolina Green Party as an official party in the state. The 2008 United States Senate election in North Carolina was held on Tuesday, November 4, 2008. The Senate election coincided with the presidential, U.S. House elections, gubernatorial, Council of State, and statewide judicial elections. Incumbent Republican U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole ran for re-election to a second term, but was defeated by Democrat Kay Hagan. The November general election was the first time in North Carolina history, and only the eighth time in U.S. history, that the two major-party candidates for a U.S. Senate seat were both women. Chris Cole (born January 17, 1964, in Huntersville, North Carolina) is a Libertarian Party activist in North Carolina. He has run unsuccessfully for a number of local, state, and federal offices. In 2008, it was thought that his candidacy might act as a spoiler in what was expected to be a close U.S. Senate race. Early political career In 1996, Cole unsuccessfully ran as a Libertarian for a seat in the North Carolina General Assembly against Jim Black in House District 36. In 2001, Cole sought election to the District 4 seat on the Charlotte City Council, challenging incumbent Malcolm Graham. Graham was re-elected, with 6,976 votes to Cole's 762. In 2002, Cole ran for the U.S. Congress in North Carolina's 9th congressional district. In that race, Republican Sue Myrick was re-elected with 72% of the vote to Democrat Ed McGuire's 26%. The 1992 North Carolina gubernatorial election was held on November 3, 1992. Incumbent Governor James G. Martin was unable to run for a third consecutive term due to term limits, and his Lieutenant Governor, Jim Gardner, was chosen to replace him as the Republican nominee. Gardner had also been the nominee in a previous gubernatorial election over twenty years earlier. Former Governor Jim Hunt decided to seek his third term as the Democratic nominee.
